SAULT STE. MARIE, Mich. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team controlled the pace of play Friday night en route to a 41-20 shot advantage, but couldn't get pucks to fall in an eventual 5-1 loss to the Lake Superior State Lakers at Taffy Abel Arena.

Team USA opened the scoring with a power-play score at 14:01 of the opening frame. Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn.) carried the puck into the offensive zone down the right wing and centered a pass to Cole Spicer (Grand Forks, N.D.), who was waiting alone at the backdoor. Spicer’s tap-in score was the 11th of the season for a 1-0 lead. Seamus Casey (Fort Myers, Fla.) collected an assist on the first score of the night.

The Lakers evened the game on a man-advantage marker of their own. A tic-tac-toe passing sequence ended with a one-timer from Harrison Roy to tie the game at a goal apiece.

Lake Superior took the lead before the close of the opening period when Logan Jenuwine found a loose puck and out-waited U18 netminder Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) with a wraparound goal to put the home team up 2-1 after 20 minutes.

Roy added a second power-play tally just over six minutes into the second. He used a Laker screen on Silverstein to help fire his shot over the glove and Jenuwine connected in front later in the period for his second of the evening to give the hosts a 4-1 lead.

Miroslav Mucha added a late empty-net score for the 5-1 final.

Silverstein and Michael Chambre (Fort Myers, Fla.) split time in net for the U18s but Lake State goalie Seth Eisele stole the show with a 40-save performance for the Lakers.

The U18s are back home at USA Hockey Arena tomorrow evening when they host the Madison Capitols. Puck drop is set for 7:00 p.m. in Plymouth, Michigan. Tickets are available by calling the USA Hockey Arena box office at 734-453-6400 or by visiting
