U18s Top Michigan Tech For Third Collegiate Win

Berard and Cooley each score one in tonight's victory

HOUGHTON, Mich. --- Logan Cooley (Pittsburgh, Pa.) scored the game winner in the U.S. National Under-18 Team’s 2-1 victory over Michigan Tech University on Saturday night at MacInnes Ice Arena.

Michigan Tech opened scoring 8:02 into the first period off a goal from Brian Halonen on assists from Colin Swoyer and Parker Saretsky to take an early 1-0 lead.

Team USA quickly answered courtesy of Brady Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.). Berard’s goal was set-up by Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz.), with 7:56 left to go, tying the game at 1-1.

With his goal, Berard picked up his second of the season, now reading two goals and two assists on the stat sheet for the year.

Scoring the lone goal of the second period, Cooley netted a backhander on a breakaway opportunity, setup by Lane Hutson (North Barrington, Ill.) and Charlie Leddy Fairfield, Conn.), to give Team USA a 2-1 lead.

Cooley’s goal now ties him for first overall on the Under-18 Team in goals, with five, joining teammates Frank Nazar III(Mount Clemens, Mich.), Marek Hejduk (Parker, Colo.) and Gauthier. 

Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) played all 60 minutes between the pipes for Team USA. He finished with 23 saves on 24 shots to pick up his fourth win of the season and second career win against a NCAA Division I opponent. 

The U18s are back on the road next weekend for a pair of collegiate match-ups. Team USA will face Cornell University on Sat., Oct. 23 at 7:00 p.m. ET, before heading to Mercyhurst College on Sun., Oct. 24 for puck drop at 5:00 p.m. ET.
