They say there is no greater bond than that of family and for Lane Hutson the bond between him and his older brother, Quinn, runs ice deep.

Growing up, the Hutson brothers spent much time at the rink with one another, including their time together playing for Team Illinois and the North Jersey Avalanche programs which allowed them to grow and develop their games side-by-side.

“Being able to play with and against one another has been really fun and competitive because we both have just pushed each other every day to be better,” Hutson stated.

After so many seasons of developing and playing with each other, during the 2020-21 season the Huston brothers finally went head-to-head as they both rostered for USHL organizations.

Lane was named to the U17s for the National Team Development Program, competing as Team USA, while Quinn skated his way onto the Muskegon Lumberjacks roster.

“These opportunities still allowed us to push each other and take each other to the next level, plus it’s fun beating him sometimes since he’s the older brother,” Hutson said.

With such a different year behind us all and as we begin to move out of the 2020 pandemic, it is safe to say that many of us appreciated that extra time we were able to spend with family.

Hutson and his brother found numerous ways to spend their free time whether that was getting in some off-ice training, playing video games or anything to keep the competitive spirit alive.

“We have such a strong relationship,” Hutson explained. “We are just really close so we’re hanging out all the time and basically play hockey whenever we can.”

As players, the early stages of your career can be tough as you adjust to new training regiments, new diets, traveling and spending the majority of your weekends in hotels. Overall, just balancing a new daily routine.

As Hutson began to take these new steps, especially coming to the NTDP, it was nice to know that he could lean on his brother a little to help him through the next phases of his career.

“It definitely makes it a lot easier because I have someone to rely on and knowing he is always there just helps a lot,” Huston stated. “It takes some pressure off of me that he can really help with any problems I have because he has been through a lot of it being older.”

Moving into the 2021-22 season, the Hutson brothers will experience their first year in many away from one another both on and off the ice as Quinn enters his freshman season at Boston University.

Entering his final year with the NTDP, Lane believes that he will be able to find that same camaraderie and shoulder to lean on with his fellow USA teammates.

“With my teammates at the rink, they are all like brothers to me,” Hutson said. “It’s really fun coming in and working with them every day.”

Hutson, who was pulled up to compete at the IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship back in April, had over a month’s worth of time to build strong relationships with his teammates and coaches while in a bubble in Frisco, Texas.

From all the time spent at the rink, in the weight room, on the road and everything in between, the brotherhood of the NTDP players and its alumnus runs deep.

“It is amazing because everyone is here for a reason. It is super fun just playing with all those guys and more fun winning with them, too,” Hutson explained.

Before taking the next step in his career and joining his brother at Boston University, where he is currently committed, Hutson still has some unfinished business in Plymouth.

Ready to get back to a more normal year of hockey, Hutson and his newly initiated U18 teammates have their eyes set on success, both on and off the ice.

“Just keep building off of last season,” Huston stated. “I’m hoping we can just get better as a team, have more success and I think it’ll just be a fun year.”
