Korpi notches season-best 39 saves in setback

GREEN BAY, Wis. – Frank Nazar III (Mount Clemens, Mich.) notched his fourth goal in five games and Cameron Korpi (South Lyon, Mich.) stopped a career-high 39 shots, but their efforts were not enough as the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell, 4-2, to the Green Bay Gamblers Friday night at the Resch Center.

The Gamblers took an early three-goal lead in the first period, but the U.S. broke through with 2:58 remaining in the frame when Nazar collected a behind-the-net feed from Cruz Lucius (Grant, Minn.) and put a shot from close range past Green Bay netminder Aaron Randazzo to cut the lead to 3-1.

The Gamblers outshot the U.S., 20-11, in the middle frame but Korpi came up big throughout the period to hold Green Bay scoreless and keep it a 3-1 game heading into the final intermission.

Box Score

Brennan Ali (Glencoe, Ill.) fired a rebounded shot from Mikey DeAngelo (Itasca, Ill.) past Randazzo to pull the U17s within a goal of the Gamblers, but Green Bay responded moments later to regain a two-goal lead.

The U.S. pulled Korpi in the final minutes of regulation to utilize an extra attacker, but could not capitalize on the man advantage and settled for a 4-2 loss.

Korpi ended the night with a career-high 39 saves in the loss.

The U.S. returns to action Saturday night in Dubuque, Iowa when they take on the Fighting Saints. Puck drop is slated for an 8:05 p.m. ET start and the game can be viewed live on HockeyTV.com.
