Nazar III, Snuggerud score in setback

PLYMOUTH, Mich. – The U.S. National Under-17 Team closed out their USHL regular season slate with a 5-2 loss to the Green Bay Gamblers Saturday evening at USA Hockey Arena.

The Gamblers jumped out to a 2-0 lead early in the first period before Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn.) skated the puck into the offensive zone and released a low shot that beat Gamblers goaltender Matthew Davis over the glove, cutting Green Bay's advantage to 2-1.

The Gamblers found the back of the net once more in the opening frame to take a 3-1 lead into the first intermission.

After a mostly quiet second period, Frank Nazar III (Mount Clemens, Mich.) collected a pass from Marek Hejduk (Parker, Colo.) on the penalty kill and scored a breakaway shorthanded goal to pull within a tally of the Gamblers at the 19:14. mark of the frame. The shorty marked Nazar's fourth of the season.

Green Bay forward Cam Thiesing scored early in the final stanza to give the Gamblers a two-goal lead, and despite generating offensive chances throughout the period, could not convert. In the final moments of the game, the Gamblers notched and empty-net goal to put the 5-2 game out of reach.

Goaltender Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) made 24 saves in the loss.

The U17s return to the ice next week when they hit the road for a pair of contests against the Gamblers and the Dubuque Fighting Saints. Puck drop for both games is slated for 8:05 p.m. ET starts.
