Fleming scores two in victory

DUBUQUE, Iowa – Maddox Fleming (Rochester, Minn.) tallied a three-point performance, which included a pair of goals and an assist, to lead the U.S. to 5-4 shootout victory Thursday evening at Mystique Community Ice Center.

The two teams return to action Friday for an 8 p.m. ET series finale in Dubuque before the U.S. heads to Wisconsin for a Saturday matchup against the Green Gamblers.

Fleming opened the scoring 5:54 into the opening frame, firing a sharp-angle past Fighting Saints goaltender Lukas Parik to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead.

Dubuque managed to equalize two-and-a-half minutes later, and despite a pair of chances for the U.S, the first period ended in a 1-1 tie.

Fleming evened the score with his second tally of the night just three minutes into the third stanza.

Dubuque retook the lead moments later in the third lead change of the night, but Tyler Duke (Strongsville, Ohio) notched his third goal of the year at the 14:42 mark of the period to make it a 4-4 game.

The U17s fought off a four-minute double minor in the final minutes of regulation to force overtime, and Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) made the game-winning penalty shot to give the U17s two points.

Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) made 34 stops in the victory.
