Stramel notches first career hat trick in victory

ELMIRA, N.Y. – Fueled by a hat trick performance from Charlie Stramel (Rosemount, Minn.), the U.S. National Under-17 Team rounded out a three-game weekend with a 9-2 win over the Elmira College Soaring Eagles Sunday afternoon at Murray Athletic Center.

With the victory, the U17s are now two-for-three in the 2020-21 Kroger College Series.

After a slow start in the opening period, the U.S. capitalized on a quick transition and Stramel buried a rebound from a Devin Kaplan (Bridgewater, N.J.) shot to net his first of the afternoon and kickstart a seven-goal run with 5:15 to play in the frame.

Box Score

Seamus Casey (Estero, Fla.) extended his scoring streak to three games two minutes and 30 seconds later, firing a shot through traffic and high over the shoulder of Elmira goaltender Chris Janzen to give the U.S. a 2-0 lead.

Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.) capped off the first period scoring with a tally of his own to make it a 3-0 game heading into the first intermission. Ryan Chesley (Mahtomedi, Minn.) started the play in the defensive zone, carrying the puck all the way into the Elmira zone before weaving through a pair of defenders and slotting a feed to Howard for the score.

Stramel and Howard netted their second goals of the game to continue the scoring in the middle frame, and Cruz Lucius (Grant, Minn.) deked a defender in the offensive zone and fired a shot off the crossbar and in at 17:55 mark to secure a 6-0 lead with one period to play.

Stramel completed his hat trick at the 8:27 mark of the final frame, and Brady Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.) added an eighth goal to the U.S. ledger before Elmira got on the scoresheet with a tally late in the period.

Kaplan reestablished the eight-goal lead seconds later, and the Soaring Eagles tacked on a second goal in the final moments to round out a 9-2 victory for the U.S.

Kaidan Mbereko (Aspen, Colo.) and Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) combined for 25 saves in the win.

The U17s return to action this weekend when they take on Muskegon on the road before returning to USA Hockey Arena to take on the Chicago Steel on Sunday.
