Gilmartin scores a pair including overtime winner

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - Liam Gilmartin (Falls Church, Va.) scored his second goal of the game with 2:18 remaining in overtime as the U18s completed the comeback to beat the Youngstown Phantoms, 4-3, Sunday evening at Covelli Centre.

In the 3-on-3 session, Aidan Hreschuk (Long Beach, Calif.) fed Caden Brown (St. Louis, Mo.) entering the offensive zone. Brown drifted to the right wing and found Gilmartin charging the net. The Providence College commit one-touched it into the back of the net to give the U18s the weekend series over the Phantoms.

After Youngstown jumped out to a 3-0 lead through the first 30 minutes of the game, Sean Behrens (Barrington, Ill.) started the comeback with a power-play goal at 10:32 of the second period. Off of an extended offensive-zone possession, Luke Hughes (Canton, Mich.) fed Behrens for a one-timer to get on the board. Jeremy Wilmer (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) added an assist on the score.

Justin Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) cut the deficit to one when he connected from the left wing while shorthanded. Roman Schmidt (Midland, Mich.) collected a loose puck on the penalty and kill and fed Janicke down the left side for a 2-on-1. The Notre Dame commit collected and fired from the left faceoff circle for his 11th score of the season.

Team USA tied the game at 3-3 less than 90 seconds later off the stick of Gilmartin. Jacob Martin (Eagle River, Wis.) made a nifty play to keep the puck inside the blue line and fed Wilmer below the defense. Wilmer went cross-ice to Gilmartin who netted his first of the game and seventh of the season.

After neither team could finish the game in regulation, Gilmartin ended it with his first multi-goal game of the season. He now has 11 points (4g-7a) over his last four games played.

Tommy Aitken (Winchester, Mass.) turned aside 19 Youngstown shots to win his first start in an NTDP sweater.

Team USA outshot the Phantoms by a 42-22 margin.

The U18s return to action next weekend as they get back to their Kroger College Series when they travel to Tempe, Arizona to take on the Arizona State Sun Devils for a pair of games on Thursday and Friday evenings.
