GREEN BAY, Wis. – The U.S. National Under-17 Team suffered its first sweep of the season, falling, 5-4, in overtime to the Green Bay Gamblers in a back-and-forth series finale Thursday night at the Resch Center.
The Gamblers opened the scoring once again, jumping out to a quick 2-0 lead before Team USA capitalized on the man advantage when Logan Cooley (West Mifflin, Pa.) fired a laser past Green Bay goaltender Aaron Randazzo to cut the Gamblers' lead to 2-1.
Lane Hutson (Barrington, Ill.) notched his second goal of the season just over three minutes later to tie the game, picking up a pass from Marek Hejduk (Parker, Colo.) and burying the puck high over the shoulder of Randazzo.
Green Bay scored late in the first period to take a 3-2 lead into the first intermission, but an odd-man rush ended with a shot from Frank Nazar III (Mount Clemens, Mich.) that deflected off the skate of a Gamblers defender and past Randazzo to knot the game at three goals apiece.
The U.S. took a 4-3 lead after Charlie Stramel (Rosemount, Minn.) teed up a shot for Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn.) at the left circle who missed the original shot before burying the rebound to lift the U.S.
Green Bay's Jake Schmaltz scored with a minute remaining in the middle frame to even the score, and after a scoreless third period, Mason Lorhei completed the Gambler comeback in overtime, scoring at the buzzer to give Green Bay a 5-4 win.
Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) made a career-high 49 saves in the loss.
The U17s return to USA Hockey Arena Saturday as they continue USHL play with a matchup against the Muskegon Lumberjacks. Puck drop is slated for 7 p.m. ET.
