McGroarty scores two in setback

GENEVA, Ill.  – Rutger McGroarty (Lincoln, Neb.) continued his impressive scoring tear with a pair of goals, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell, 5-4, in a shootout to the Chicago Steel Friday night at Fox Valley Ice Arena.

Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.) continued his impressive goal-scoring campaign, opening the scoring for the U17s when he stole the puck from a Chicago defenseman in the neutral zone and beat the goaltender Nick Haas stick-side to take a 1-0 lead 1:47 into the first period.

Chicago responded to knot the game up, but Logan Cooley (West Mifflin, Pa.) turned on the jets to collect a loose puck at the offensive blue line before firing Team USA's second goal of the evening past Haas.

The Steel scored a pair of back-to-back tallies to take a 3-2.

Former NTDP forward Sean Farrell scored 1:07 into the final 4-2 game, but Cooley found McGroarty at the right circle who fired the puck past Haas to bring the U17s within a goal of the Steel.

McGroarty tied the game up 30 seconds into the final frame of the game to shift the momentum in the U17s' favor, but the U.S. could not capitalize on a flurry of chances in the waning moments of the period and settled for a 4-4 tie heading into the overtime frame.

After a trio of quality scoring chances for the U.S. in the OT period, the game went to a shootout, where the U.S. fell in four rounds.

Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) made 34 saves in the loss.
