Berard, Gauthier, Howard each tally two goals

Sault Ste Marie, Mich. – The U.S. National Under-17 Team scored nine times in the second period en route to a 12-2 win over the Soo Eagles of the Northern Ontario Junior Hockey League Tuesday night at Pullar Stadium.

The U.S. outshot the Eagles, 66-19, in the victory, and Brady Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.), Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.)  each scored two goals apiece to lead the U.S. in the scoring effort.

The U.S. opened the scoring 8:30 into the opening frame when Maddox Fleming (Rochester, Minn.) collected a pass from Ryan Chesley (Mahtomedi, Minn.) deep in the offensive zone. Fleming dished the puck across the goal line to Howard who skated across the mouth of the crease and slotted a backhander past Eagles goaltender Gabe Rosek to make it a 1-0 game.

After the Eagles responded with a goal of their own, Seamus Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) fired a shot from the left circle past Rosek off a feed from Gauthier to give the U.S. a 2-1 lead heading into the first intermission.

The flood gates opened in the middle frame, with Howard tallying his team-leading fourth goal of the season to get things rolling. Additional goals in the period came from Berard, Seamus Casey (Estero, Fla.), Chesley, Tyler Duke (Strongsville, Ohio), Fleming, Gauthier and Marek Hejduk (Parker, Colo.) and the U.S. settled into a comfortable 11-1 lead with one period remaining.

Berard tacked on his second goal of the night late in the third period to round out the scoring and secure a 12-2 victory and the U17s' second straight win of the season.

Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) stopped 17 of 19 shots in goal for the U.S.

The U17s return to Pullar Stadium Wednesday to take on the Eagles in game two of the series.  Puck drop is slated for a 7 p.m. ET start.
