JOHNSTOWN, Pa. – Eight different skaters tallied goals as the U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated the NAHL's Johnstown Tomahawks, 9-4, to split its weekend series Sunday evening at 1st Summit Arena.
After the Tomahawks scored a trio of goals to begin the first period, but the U.S. broke through at the 11:01 mark of the frame when Rutger McGroarty (Lincoln, Neb.) collected a pass from Cutter Gauthier (Scottsdale, Ariz.) and fired the puck high over the left shoulder of Johnstown goaltender Tyler Bost to make it a 3-1 game.
Less than three minutes later Brady Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.) skated a pass from Charlie Leddy (Fairfield, Conn.) into the crease and stuffed the puck between the legs of Bost to cut the Tomahawks' lead to 3-2.
Isaac Howard (Hudson, Wis.) knotted the game up at three goals apiece 2:09 into the middle frame after firing a shot from the center of the zone past Bost.
The Tomahawks regained the lead at the 13:25 remaining in the second period, but Seamus Casey (Estero, Fla.) stickhandled around a trio of Tomahawks defenders and fired a wrist shot past goaltender Sam Evola to tie the game at 4-4 heading into the third period.
Team USA took control of the game in the final stanza, scoring five times to secure the win over the Tomahawks. Ryan Chesley (Mahtomedi, Minn.) tallied his second goal in as many games to open the period, and Cole Spicer (Grand Forks, N.D.) followed up with a goal of his own to give the U.S. a 6-4 lead with 11:17 to play.
Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn.) and Seamus Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) tacked on goals to the U.S. ledger before Howard rounded out the scoring with his second goal of the game to secure a 9-4 victory.
Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) earned the win in the net for the U.S, stopping 28 of 32 shots.
