MADISON, Wis. - The U.S. National Under-18 Team outshot the Madison Capitols by a hefty 48-17 margin, but struggled to find the back of the net in a 6-1 loss Friday night at Bob Suter's Capitol Ice Arena.
Defenseman Jacob Truscott (Port Huron, Mich.) collected Team USA's only tally with a one-timer from the right circle with less than a minute to play in the second. With the U18s on a 5-on-3 advantage, Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) spun and shifted a pass to Jake Sanderson (Whitefish, Mont.) at the center-slot. The captain set up Truscott's blast for his fifth score of the season.
After a scoreless opening 20 minutes that saw the U18s take a 16-6 shot lead, Madison jumped out with the game's first pair of goals. First, Jack Horbach converted on a power play at 2:09 of the middle frame. Patrick Schmiedlin doubled the Capitols' lead when he scored from close-range near the midway mark of the period.
After Truscott's goal made it 2-1 after two periods, Madison's Jan Stibingr potted a wrist-shot from the left wing at 1:34 of the third for the Capitols' third goal.
Vincent Weis tallied a shorthanded goal near the halfway mark of the final frame.
Brock Baker and Thomas Weiss each scored late in the period for the 6-1 final.
The two sides are back at it again tomorrow evening. Puck drop is slated for 7:05 p.m. ET in Madison.
