PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Justin Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) and Jacob Truscott (Port Huron, Mich.) scored but the U.S. National Under-18 team lost, 5-2, Saturday night to the Cedar Rapids Roughriders at USA Hockey Arena. The teams split their two contests on the weekend.

The contest remained scoreless for the first 40 minutes as both Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) and Andrew Pichora IV exchanged highlight-reel saves near the midway mark of the middle frame.

Highlights

Janicke  broke through for Team USA at 3:22 of the third when he skated down the left wing with speed and sniped a shot from close range. Eamon Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) continued building on his stellar weekend as he collected the primary assist, while Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif.) picked up the secondary helper.

Cedar Rapids answered back with a pair of goals from Jordan Tonelli and Jack O’leary nine seconds apart to take a 2-1 lead.

Truscott squared the contest at two apiece when he scored on his own rebound at the halfway mark of the final period. Sean Behrens (Barrington, Ill.) and Landon Slaggert (South Bend. Ind.) registered assists.

Team USA nearly regained the lead on a shorthanded odd-man rush when Hunter Strand (Anchorage, Alaska) nailed the post with a hard shot midway through the third.

Cedar Rapids took  a 4-2 lead with another pair of quick goals at 17:02 and 17:29 from Tyler Rollwagon and Jackson Jutting. The Roughriders tacked on an empty net goal for the 5-2 final.

The U18s return to USA Hockey Arena next Thursday (Feb. 27) at 7:00 p.m. against the Youngstown Phantoms. Tickets can be purchased at the USA Hockey Arena box office, at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix or by calling 734-453-8400.
