GREEN BAY, Wis. — Ryan St. Louis (Riverside, Conn.) netted two goals and Kaidan Mbereko (Aspen, Colo.) stopped 35 shots as the U.S. Under-17 National Team earned a 4-3 victory over Green Bay on Monday night at the Resch Center.
With the victory, Team USA extends its program-record USHL win streak to 12 games. The U17s set the NTDP record with a 7-5 triumph over Dubuque on Sunday night (Dec. 29) and as a team have won 10 straight USHL contests since October 19.
The Gamblers struck first on a marker by Nicholas Zabaneh 8:01 into play before Kyler Grundy doubled Green Bay’s advantage 3:18 later.
The Gamblers took the two-goal lead into the first intermission.
The U.S. tied the contest when St. Louis and Colby Saganiuk (Plainfield, Ill.) scored just 57 seconds apart in the middle frame. First, St. Louis put home a rebound seven minutes into the period to get Team USA within one. Saganiuk converted on a partial breakaway less than a minute later to even the score.
St. Louis’ second goal of the night gave Team USA a 3-2 lead with 4:49 left in the second stanza. After Sean Behrens’ (Barrington, Ill.) centering pass went off a Gamblers’ defender, St. Louis shot the loose puck from the slot past Nicholas Grabko for the score.
Mbereko stopped all 13 shots he faced and Team USA went a perfect 5-for-5 on the penalty kill in the period as the U.S. held the 3-2 lead after 40 minutes.
Red Savage (Scottsdale, Ariz.) gave the U.S. a two-goal lead with 2:43 to play before the Gamblers scored with just two seconds remaining to account for the 4-3 final.
Team USA finished the game with a 7-for-8 effort on the penalty kill.
The U17s will take the ice for the third time in as many nights and meet the Gamblers again on Tuesday (Dec. 31) in Green Bay. Puck drop is set for 7 p.m. ET and the contest will be streamed live on HockeyTV.com.
