KAZAN, Russia- The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated Slovakia this morning, 7-1 in their Four Nations match-up in Russia behind two goals from Dylan Duke (Strongsville, Ohio) and Justin Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.).
Duke opened scoring sending the puck in with help from Luke Hughes (Manchester, N.H.) with 7:02 left in the opening frame.
Roman Schmidt (Midland, Mich.) netted is second goal in as many games after capitalizing on a 2-on-1 with Jeremy Wilmer (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) to give Team USA a 2-0 lead with 20 seconds left in the first period.
Slovakia cut the lead to 2-1 before Ethan Straky (Ormond Beach, Fla.) and Duke answered.
Straky converted another 2-on-1 with Jack Devine (Glencoe, Ill.) and Duke tipped Sasha Pastujov’s (Bradenton, Fla.) shot in front of the net to give the U17s a 4-1 lead heading into the third.
After a weird bounce on the end boards and the Slovakian goaltender out to play the puck, Wilmer netted his first of the day into a wide-open net to give the U17s a 5-1 lead.
Janicke added two goals in the last 5 minutes to seal the win, 7-1.
Kaidan Mbereko (Aspen, Colo.) stood tall in net with 20 saves in the win.
The U17s finish up their Four Nations tomorrow against host Russia at 10:30 a.m. ET.
