Drew Commesso picks up third shutout of season

KEARNEY, Neb. - Goaltender Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) negated all 28 attempts against him for his third shutout of the season as the U.S. Men's National Under-18 team topped the Tri-City Storm, 2-0, Saturday night at Viaero Center.

The 28 saves were the most from Commesso in any of his three shutout bids this season, and his sixth career shutout propels him to a tie for fourth place on the NTDP's all-time list.

One of Commesso's best came late in the third period when he blockered away a one-timer from the Storm's Nick Portz to keep it a 1-0 game.

Box Score

Brett Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.) got Team USA on the board halfway through the first period when he finished a rebound attempt alone in front of the net. Jacob Truscott (Port Huron, Mich.) centered the puck on net from the left wing where the Storm's Daniel Allin made the initial save. The rebound floated out front where Berard was stationed and he banged it home for his tenth score of the season.

That was all the offense the U18s needed on the night before defenseman Jake Sanderson (Whitefish, Mont.) put the game on ice with an empty-netter in the final minute of regulation.

The U18s return home for their next contest Wednesday evening against the Youngstown Phantoms in a Thanksgiving Eve matchup. Puck drop is slated for 7:00 p.m. at USA Hockey Arena. Tickets for that game, or any future NTDP home game, are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/tix.
