Beniers grabs fifth goal in last five games

YOUNGSTOWN, Ohio - The U.S. National Under-18 Team scored three first-period goals, but could not hold on in an eventual 6-3 loss to the Youngstown Phantoms Saturday evening at Covelli Centre.

Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) gave Team USA a 1-0 lead less than five minutes into the game with a power-play goal. Brock Faber (Maple Grove, Minn.) slid a pass to Bordeleau at the top of the left point. The forward took a stride in and released a wrist shot from the top of the faceoff circle that got past a screened Dominic Basse. Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) also picked up an assist on the score.

The man-up goal made it seven consecutive games with a power-play goal for the U18 group.

Beniers collected his second point of the night when he connected on a breakaway attempt while shorthanded. The Harvard University commit picked up a loose puck in the neutral zone and flew by the Youngstown defense. He made a slight forehand deke before he finished with a quick shot through the five-hole of Basse. The unassisted score was Beniers' fifth goal in his last five games.

Chase Yoder (Fairview, Texas) gave the U18s a 3-0 lead just 37 seconds later when he converted on a breakaway of his own. Zakary Karpa (Newport Beach, Calif.) made the extra-effort play to push the puck forward for Yoder. His deke ended with a quick backhand shot through the legs of Basse for three straight USA goals.

Youngstown charged back and tied the game at 3-3 before the close of the first period.

The Phantoms notched the only goal of the second period while John Beaton and Reilly Funk scored in the third for the 6-3 final score.

The U18s are back on the road next weekend when they travel to Nebraska to take on the Tri-City Storm for a pair of games.

The U17s will return to action at USA Hockey Arena for carnival weekend on Friday and Saturday nights.
