U18s Best Finland in Shootout, 3-2

Eamon Powell scores three times in shootout

SUNDSVALL, Sweden - The U.S. National Under-18 Team took down Finland, 3-2 in a shootout, Saturday afternoon to win its third straight game of the Five Nations tournament.

Brett Berard (East Greenwich, R.I.) and Tanner Latsch (Muskegon, Mich.) scored in regulation while Eamon Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) netted three shootout goals for Team USA.

Berard kicked off the scoring with a power-play tally at 15:21 of the opening period. Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) wheeled the puck behind the net and found Berard alone at the bottom of the left faceoff circle. Berard collected and forced his shot through the Finnish netminder for a 1-0 lead.

Highlights

Latsch doubled the advantage with a quick wrist-shot from the right wing just over six minutes into the middle frame. Latsch fed Daniyal Dzhaniyev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) as the rush broke into the offensive zone. Dzhaniyev dropped a pass for Latsch, who fired a laser over the shoulder of goaltender Joel Blomqvist.

Finland got one goal back before the end of the second period and then tied the game with 3:13 remaining in regulation. 

After a scoreless overtime period, the game finished in a shootout that went seven rounds. Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colo.) scored in the opening round and then Powell connected three more times to end the contest.

Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) picked up the win for Team USA as he stopped 18 of the 20 shots he faced in regulation. The Boston University commit turned aside four more in the shootout.

The Americans held a 44-20 shot advantage in this contest and have now outshot their opponents, 124-52, through the tournament's first three games.

Team USA will finish out the Five Nations tomorrow afternoon against host, Sweden. Puck drop is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. CET / 8:30 a.m. EST from Sundsvall Energi Arena.
