U17s Down Canada White at U17 Challenge

Brown, Lucius, Saganiuk, Behrens and Duke record multi-point games

MEDICINE HAT, Alta. - The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated Canada White tonight (Nov. 4), 6-4, in its second preliminary-round game at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

“It’s always fun when you play against Canada and it’s even better when you beat them,” head coach John Wroblewski said. “There’s tons of learning points for us and we have to keep growing in the tournament. That’s the key to international hockey – to get better every game.”  

Colby Saganiuk (Plainfield, Ill.) opened the scoring after tapping in the puck from Caden Brown (St. Louis, Mo.) at 2:09 of the first period to give the U.S. a 1-0 lead. Sean Behrens (Barrington, Ill.) also picked up an assist on the opening goal.

At 10:24 of the first period, Canada White knotted the game, 1-1.

Brown re-took the lead for the U.S. National Under-17 Team after deflecting Sasha Pastujov’s (Bradenton, Fla.) shot at the 11:11 mark.

At 12:01 of the first period, Dylan Duke (Strongsville, Ohio) dragged the puck into the slot before sending it into the back of the net. Chaz Lucius (Grant, Minn.) and Ethan Straky (Ormond Beach, Fla.) picked up the assists.

Lucius netted his 18th goal of the year after rifling in a pass from Saganiuk on a breakaway. The goal gave the U.S. a 4-1 lead at 2:09 of the second period.

Canada White got one back making it 4-2 at the 4:49 mark.

Luke Hughes (Manchester, N.H.) put the puck into the back of the net from the left side of the goal line on the power play at 8:49 of the middle frame. Lucius picked up his third point of the night with the primary assist while Duke tallied his second with the secondary.

Canada White netted a power-play goal of their own to end the period scoring at 14:59.

At the 2:07 mark of the third period, Canada White netted its second power-play goal of the night.

Justin Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.) walked the blue line before sending the puck to Aidan Hreschuk (Long Beach, Calif.) who wristed it in from the right circle. The goal gave the U.S. a 6-4 lead at the 2:52 mark of the third period.  

The U.S. continues play tomorrow (Nov. 5) afternoon at 3 p.m. MT/5 p.m. ET against Canada Black to close out its preliminary-round play.
