Weekend continues tomorrow afternoon at Holy Cross

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Ty Smilanic (Denver, Colo.) scored his first goal of the season for USA Hockey's National Under-18 Team, but the U18s fell, 2-1 in overtime, to the Providence Friars Saturday evening in Rhode Island.

Former NTDP skater Patrick Moynihan scored the game's first goal for Providence at 7:21 of the opening period, but Team USA held the Friars without another score for the remainder of regulation.

Smilanic tied the game at 7:36 of the second period when he drilled home a second-chance opportunity. Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) led a 3-on-2 charge and found linemate Luke Tuch (Baldwinsville, N.Y.) on the left wing, where he fired the original shot on net. After the initial save was made by Friars goaltender, Gabe Mollot-Hill, Smilanic found the loose puck and netted the rebound to tie the game. Tuch's assist pushed his team-leading points total to nine (4g-5a) through seven games.

Box Score

Neither side could gather another goal during the game's final stanza and the contest went to overtime tied at one goal apiece.

The Friars' Craig Needham pushed home a loose puck in front of the USA cage 71 seconds into the extra session to give Providence the win.

Team USA goaltender Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis.) was excellent in net, turning aside 22 of the 24 shots he faced. The University of Wisconsin commit has turned in back-to-back stout performances after keeping out 15 of 16 shots Tuesday evening against Ferris State.

Providence ended the game with a tight 24-18 advantage in shots on net.

The U18s get another crack in their NCAA Series as they travel to Holy Cross to take on the Crusaders tomorrow afternoon. Puck drop is slated for 4:00 p.m. ET from the Hart Center in Worcester, Mass.
