Wilmer and Murchison score in 4-2 defeat

BLAINE, Minn. - Jeremy Wilmer (Rockville Centre, N.Y.) scored his second goal of the season, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped its last contest of the NAHL Showcase, 4-2, to the Amarillo Bulls Saturday evening.

Wilmer used great hand-eye coordination to chip in a centering feed from defenseman Luke Hughes (Manchester, N.H.) out of mid-air. With Team USA on the power play, Red Savage (Northville, Mich.) found Hughes streaking down the left wing and Wilmer's tip-in made it a 3-1 contest at 7:01 of the second period.

Amarillo got four goals from a quartet of skaters, led by Brendan Blair opening the game's scoring at 16:13 of the opening period. The Bulls took a shot from the right point that got deflected in front of the USA cage. The puck deflected right to Blair who was standing alone in front to make it 1-0.

Nick Trela doubled the lead to 2-0 just 69 seconds into the middle frame. The forward scooped up a loose puck to the left of goaltender Gibson Homer (Grand Rapids, Mich.) and finished a wraparound opportunity for the second goal of the game.

The Bulls' Linus Udd Hellgren and Lauri Sertti used shorthanded and power-play scores, respectively, on each side of Wilmer's tally to make it a 4-1 game.

Ty Murchison (Corona, Calif.) netted the final goal of the game on a one-timer with 1:58 remaining in regulation. Dylan Duke (Strongsville, Ohio) had a nice set-up from behind the net and the defenseman blasted his shot home from the left faceoff dot.

The U17s are back in action next week when they head back to Minnesota for the Elite League. They open their home schedule at USA Hockey Arena on September 11 against Muskegon.
