Team USA finishes second at tournament

FÜSSEN, Germany – Gleb Veremyev (Sayreville, N.J.) and Ryan Humphrey (Northville, Mich.) each scored twice to help the U.S. Under-17 Men's Select Team to a 7-3 win here over Germany tonight in the final game for both teams at the 2019 Five Nations Tournament. With three wins in four tournament games, the U.S. finished second in the event.

"It was a really nice way to finish up tonight with a nice win against the Germans," said head coach Matt Curley. "Overall, it was a great group to work with and I'm really proud and happy with the effort that we displayed representing the United States. I'm looking forward to following this group moving forward."

Germany took a 1-0 lead 2:36 into the opening frame, but the U.S. quickly responded when Veremyev tipped a shot from David Hymovitch (Phoenix, Ariz.) past German goaltender Luca All to tie the game.

Matt Argentina (Philadelphia, Pa.) regained the lead for the U.S. on the power play after firing a wrist shot from the circle that beat All glove-side to make it a 2-1 game heading into the first intermission.

Germany evened the score in the opening minutes of a back-and-forth middle frame, but the U.S. retook the lead when Tyler Haskins (Rochester, Minn.) fired home a cross-ice pass from Luke Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie, Minn.) at close range.

Sten Fischer tied the game for the Germans 14:05 into the second stanza, but Humphrey scored what proved to be the game-winning goal less than two minutes later with a shot high over the shoulder of All.

Luke Buss (Kansas City, Mo.) opened the scoring in the third period, poking the puck in from the top of the crease to extend the U.S. lead to 5-3 before Veremyev and Humphrey added their second goals of the night to secure a 7-3 win over the host nation.

Highlights

Will Fox (Gross Point, Mich.) earned the win in goal for the United States.

NOTES: Ryan Humphrey was named the U.S. Player of the Game … The United States skated to its fourth second-place finish and its 13th consecutive top-three finish at the tournament … Matt Argentina (2G, 6A) and Kenny Connors (1G, 7A) were Team USA’s top point producers in the tournament.
