U18s Top Buccaneers, 7-3

PLYMOUTH, Mich. -- Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.), Cam York (Anaheim Hills, Calif.), Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) and Sean Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass.) tallied one goal and one assist each in the U.S. National Under-18 Team’s 7-3 win against the Des Moines Buccaneers on Friday, Mar. 22 at USA Hockey Arena. With 606 goals, the U18s now hold the record for most goals scored by an NTDP class.

The U18’s record improves to 38-11-2-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL), while Team USA’s combined record in USHL play is 27-18-2-4. The Buccaneer’s record is now 30-20-1-4 (W-L-OTL-SOL).

Zegras sent a backhand shot past the Buccaneer’s goalie Romany Durny at at 6:35 of the first period, giving the U18s a 1-0 lead. The goal also marked the 600th for the 2017-19 class.

With 2:05 remaining in the first period, Mac Welsher scored to knot the game at one apiece, with assists from Sam Renlund and Scooter Brickey.

Highlights

Buccaneers forward Matt Brown scored to take a 2-1 lead at 1:54 of the second period, with an assist from Michael Mancinelli.

The U18s went on to score five unanswered goals to take a 6-2 lead.

At 5:27 of the second period, Michael Gildon’s (Plano, Texas) shot from the top of the left circle tied the game up at 2-2. Marshall Warren (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) and Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) recorded assists.

Turcotte tipped the puck past Durney off of a backhand pass from Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) with 5:23 remaining in the second period, breaking the tie.

Forty-four seconds later, Matthew Beniers (Hingham, Mass.) traced the top of the right circle, sending the puck into the net from the slot to give the U18s its fourth goal of the night.

York’s goal with three minutes remaining in the middle frame was the 604th goal for the team and secured the U18s as the top scoring NTDP class, exceeding the 1997 class’s 603-goal record.

Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) sealed the 6-2 lead with 1:37 remaining in the second period, capitalizing with a slapshot off of a pass from York.

Farrell scored unassisted at 7:33 to give the U18’s a 7-2 lead, snagging the puck from a Buccaneers defenseman and sending it glove side.

Jack Clement scored to give Des Moines its third goal of the game with 4:14 remaining, but the Buccaneers could not overcome the four-goal deficit.

Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) made 18 saves in net.

NOTES: Team USA outshot Des Moines 42-21... Team USA was 1-for-3 on the power play and 2-for-2 on the penalty kill… Alex Turcotte earned First Star of the Game… Trevor Zegras earned Second Star of the Game… Michael Gildon earned Third Star of the Game… Sean Farrell earned Hardest Worker of the Game.
