U17s fall to Cedar Rapids in shootout

CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa -- Landon Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) scored in the U.S. National Under-17 Team’s 2-1 shootout loss against the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders on Saturday, Mar. 16, at the Cedar Rapids Ice Arena.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team’s record is now 18-21-3-4 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and Team USA’s combined record in USHL play is 26-18-2-5. The RoughRiders’ record is now 30-18-2-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL)

The RoughRiders opened scoring at 6:27 of the first frame to take a 1-0 lead. Liam Walsh capitalized on the power play, with assists from Kyle Looft and Ethan Wolthers.

ith 5:07 left in the first period, Slaggert broke away from the defense and knotted the game at one. Ty Smilanic (Elizabeth, Colo.) and Dylan Peterson (Roseville, Calif.) tallied assists on the goal.

The score was tied 1-1 and shots were tied 6-6 after twenty minutes of play.

Box Score

Neither team could capitalize on opportunities through the second period and the score remained the same through forty minutes of play.

Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) made six saves in the middle frame to hold the RoughRiders to one goal.

The U17s and Cedar Rapids battled for dominance through the third period. Commesso held off the RoughRiders’ efforts, including a sprawling save at 4:40 of the final frame.

The game went on to overtime, but the RoughRiders ultimately took the game in a seven-round shootout.

NOTES: Team USA was outshot 24-10… Team USA was 0-for-4 on the power play… Team USA was 3-for-4 on the penalty kill.
