Powell Scores Game-Winner in OT as the U17s Bend the Steel 5-4

U17s head to Cedar Rapids (March 15-16) for pair of away games.

CHICAGO, Ill. - Eamon Powell (Marcellus, N.Y.) scored the game-winning goal in overtime and four other U17 players notch a goal apiece in the U.S. National Under-17 Team’s 5-4 victory against the Chicago Steel at Fox Valley Ice Arena on Saturday, March 9th.

The U17s record improves to 18-21-3-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL) and Team USA’s combined record in USHL play also improves to 24-18-2-3 (W-L-OTL-SOL).

Just 2:44 into the opening frame, Daniyal Dzhaniyev (Brooklyn, N.Y.) found Landon Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) with a centering pass, who tucked it away to give Team USA an early 1-0 lead. A quick 36 seconds later, Chicago Steel answered back with a tying goal.

Tanner Latsch (Twin Lakes, Mich.) scored a power-play goal to give the U17s a one-goal lead 7:45 into the first period. The play started when Thomas Bordeleau (Houston, Texas) won a battle in the corner and dished the puck back to Latsch at the blueline.

Chase Yoder (Fairview, Texas) registered Team USA’s third goal of the period with 8:02 left in the opening stanza. Yoder initially won the faceoff, which was then picked up by Hunter McKown (San Jose, Calif.). McKown tapped the puck back to Latsch, who backhanded the puck towards the net. Yoder crashed the net, picking up the rebound and tallying the goal.

Chicago Steel notched a goal with 6:38 left in the period, closing the period at 3-2 in favor of Team USA.   

With 9:39 minutes left in the middle frame, Drew Commesso (Norwell, Mass.) relieved Noah Grannan (Germantown, Wis) in net. Grannan registered 30 minutes and 21 seconds, saving 13 out of 15 shots on net.

Team USA's lead was doubled when Hunter Strand (Anchorage, Alaska) scored with 7:28 left in the middle period, assisted by Slaggert.

Commesso stood tall during the second half of the middle stanza, saving all five shots on net produced by the Chicago Steel.

To start the third period, Chicago Steel registered two goals, tying the game at fours. Goals came at 37 seconds and 1:31 into the third.

Neither team could obtain the go-ahead goal in the final stanza, forcing the game to head into overtime.

With 20 seconds left in overtime, Powell lit the lamp on a breakaway, scoring his fourth USHL goal of the season to give Team USA a 5-4 victory over the Chicago Steel.

Commesso registered 34 minutes and 19 seconds of play, saving 18 of the 20 shots on net.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team return to USHL play next weekend, traveling to Cedar Rapids. The U17s will verse the Cedar Rapids RoughRiders at Cedar Rapids Ice Arena Friday (March 15) and Saturday (March 16). Puck drops at 8:05 p.m. ET for both games.  

NOTES: Team USA went 3-for-3 on the penalty kill and 1-for-3 on the power play … The Chicago Steel outshot Team USA 35-33 ... Eamon Powell earned the No. 1 Star of the Game.

Michael Gildon (Plano, Texas) tied the game at three at 9:37 of the second period lifting the puck on the backhand.

Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) regained the lead for the U17s at 10:03 of the middle frame. Marshall Warren (Laurel Hollow, N.Y.) sent the puck to Zegras at the top of the left circle who then wristed it beyond Karki on the power play.Ryan Siedem (Madison, N.J.) also picked up an assist on the goal.

A giveaway by Muskegon in the slot resulted in Caufield’s second goal of the game at 4:44 of the third period.

Caufield competed the hat trick at 6:51 of the final frame with help from Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) and Henry Thrun (Southborough, Mass,).

Boldy picked up his second point of the afternoon and gave the U17s the 7-3 lead at the 13:21 mark of the third period.

Muskegon added two goals at 17:11 and 18:30 of the third before John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) sealed the 8-5 win with the empty-netter. Boldy tallied his third point of the day with the lone assist. 

Both Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) and Muskegon’s Karki tallied 21 saves.

With the U17s win and the U18s win on the road, Team USA currently sits in first place of the Eastern Conference with 35 points.

The U17s are back in action Saturday (Jan. 20) when the Sioux Falls Stampede come to USA Hockey Arena for Star Wars Night. Tickets are available at USAHockeyNTDP.com/Tix.
