CAMPUS DOUGHNUTS: Goaltender Tyler Muszelik (Long Valley, N.J.) and the Under-18 squad blanked the North Dakota Fighting Hawks, 2-0, to kick off the new year for the NTDP's first win over North Dakota in a dozen tries. The future New Hampshire Wildcat made all 17 saves in his first shutout of the season, his second since coming to the NTDP.

The win marked the third collegiate shutout for the U18s after beating Michigan State, 3-0, to start the 2021-22 Kroger College Series in October and a 4-0 shutout over the Wisconsin Badgers in Madison in early December. Dylan Silverstein (Calabasas, Calif.) collected both of those blankings with 30 saves against the Spartans and a season-high 43 saves in Wisconsin.

LUCKY NUMBER 13: U18 forward Jimmy Snuggerud (Chaska, Minn.) picked up five points in the team's three games last week to extend his point-streak to 13 consecutive games. Over the stretch, the 6-foot-2 forward has deposited nine goals and added 13 assists for 22 total points.

The University of Minnesota commit got an opportunity to play his collegiate team Monday evening and scored a goal against his future teammates in an eventual 5-3 loss for the U18s. 

Snuggerud has a pair of hat-tricks over his scoring streak in wins over Finland at a Five Nations tournament in Switzerland and over Buffalo State the day after Thanksgiving. He has three total hat-tricks on the year, the other also coming in international play, his only trio of multi-goal games on the campaign. 

POINT PER PERRAULT: U17 forward Gabe Perreault (Hinsdale, Ill.) has racked up 27 points in 27 games with the Under-17 Team to lead the team in scoring.

The Chicago Mission product has produced five points over his last five games, including a goal and three helpers in three games in a Four Nations in Piestany, Slovakia in mid-December. 

He has seen time in four additional games with the Under-18 squad, collecting a trio of helpers. Perreault is set to rejoin the U18s for their weekend set in Dubuque with the U17s off of action this week. 

AWARDS SZN: The NTDP saw a considerable amount of alums named awards winners across NCAA and NHL action this week.

For the NHL's monthly awards in December, goaltender Thatcher Demko (Vancouver Canucks / NTDP 2011-13) was named the league's third star of the month after going 7-1-0 with a 1.72 GAA, .946 SV% and a shutout in the month.

Auston Matthews (Toronto Maple Leafs / NTDP 2013-15) was named 1st Star of December after racking up 10 goals and four assists for 14 total points in just seven games.

After taking part in what is almost assuredly going to be the NHL's play of the year, forward Trevor Zegras (Anaheim Ducks / NTDP 2017-19) was named the Rookie of the Month for December. Zegras netted twice and added nine assists, including the "Flying Z" saucer pass over the net, to take home honors.

Zegras' NTDP teammate, Jack Hughes, (New Jersey Devils / NTDP 2017-19), was named in the year's first player of the week series, taking home second star honors after an eight-point outburst in three games for the Devils, including a highlight-reel, overtime game-winning goal on New Year's Eve. Hughes is up to a point-per-game pace with 16 points (8g-8a) through his first 16 games played.

On the collegiate level, goaltender Drew Commesso (Boston University / NTDP 2018-20) took home Hockey East Goaltender of the Month for December. The Massachusetts native was between the pipes for three Terriers games, posting a 2-0-1 record, 1.59 GAA and .944 save percentage. Commesso was also the starting goaltender for the United States' only preliminary-round game at the 2022 IIHF World Junior Championship, a 3-2 win over Slovakia, before the event was canceled. He was named Team USA's best player of the game.

In the NCHC, forward Jack Devine (Denver University / NTDP 2019-21) picked up his second Rookie of the Week honors as he chipped in four points in DU's win and tie with Alaska over the weekend. He now has nine points (2g-7a) in the last six games for the Pioneers.

INTERNATIONAL BENCH BOSS: Former NTDP head coach David Quinn (2002-04) was named head coach of the 2022 U.S. Men's Olympic Team, set to compete in Beijing, China from February 3-20, 2022.

Quinn most recently served as head coach for the NHL's New York Rangers from 2018-2021 after previously being behind the bench at Boston University from 2013-2018.

This will mark Quinn's first tenure on an Olympic team after serving as an assistant coach on Team USA's World Championship squads in 1999, 2000, 2007, 2012 and 2016. Quinn has also been a part of U.S. staffs at two World Under-17 Hockey Challenges (2002, 2003), the Under-18 Men's World Championship (2003) and a World Junior Championship (2005).
