U17s Play Two in Des Moines; U18s Continues its NCAA slate

The U18s face-off against NCAA opponents while the U17s continue USHL play

USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program enters play this weekend with a 35-17-0-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) record after the U17s earned a victory against Youngstown (4-1, Dec. 30) and the U18s fell to sixth-ranked, University of North Dakota (5-2, Dec. 30) at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The U18s welcomed the new year with a victory against Ferris State University (5-1, Jan. 2) at USA Hockey Arena.

The U18s were scheduled to play a pair of NCAA matchups this week, however due to inclement weather, the game against Boston University on Friday (Jan. 5) was canceled. They will return to USA Hockey Arena on Sunday for its final NCAA home matchup of the season against Utica College (Jan. 7) at 7 p.m. ET. The U17s open the new year at Buccaneer Arena against Des Moines Buccaneers on back-to-back nights, Friday (Jan. 5) and Saturday (Jan. 6) at 7:05 p.m. CST.

Matchup Previews

TYING UP THE TERRIERS: The U.S. National Under-18 Team was scheduled to travel to Boston University for its eighth matchup of all-time on Friday (Jan. 5), however, the game was canceled due to inclement weather.

In the last matchup, the U18s came out victorious, 7-4 at Boston University on October 16, 2015. Kieffer Bellows (2015-16/Portland Winterhawks) and Clayton Keller (2014-16/Arizona Coyotes) posted three-point nights. Trent Frederic (2014-16/University of Wisconsin) scored two goals while Griffin Luce (2014-16/University of Michigan), Casey Mittelstadt (2015-16/University of Minnesota) and Will Lockwood (2014-16/University of Michigan) each potted a goal. Jake Oettinger (2014-16/Boston University) made 41 saves for the U18s.

Boston’s head coach, David Quinn formerly coached for the National Team Development Program from 2002 until 2004 before becoming coach of the Terriers. Quinn was the team captain for the Terriers during its 1987-88 season.

NTDP alum, and current, Terrier Brady Tkachuk (2015-17) is currently second in scoring for Team USA (2-5-7 in 5 GP) at the 2018 World Junior Championships. The 2018 top NHL draft prospect scored the equalizing goal against Canada in the first outdoor game at the championship to force overtime; he then scored in the shootout to cement Team USA’s win.

Jordan Greenway (2013-15), alum of the NTDP and current Terrier, was recently named to Team USA for the 2018 Winter Olympics. The Minnesota Wild draft pick helped lead Team USA to gold at the 2017 World Junior Championship. 

The Terriers have eight current players who were formerly members of the NTDP: Chad Krys (2014-16), Logan Cockerill (2015-17), John MacLeod (2012-14), Jordan Greenway (2013-15), David Farrance (2015-17), Brady Tkachuk (2015-17), Jake Oettinger (2014-16), and Nikolas Olsson (2010-2012).

Twenty-five former Terriers also played for the NTDP including Jack Eichel (2012-14/Buffalo Sabres) and Kevin Shattenkirk (2005-07/New York Rangers). Shattenkirk served as team captain for the Terriers during the 2009-10 season.

From the U18s, Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.), Jake Wise (Reading, Mass.), Jack DeBoer (Madison, N.J.), and Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.) are currently committed to BU. From the U17s, Alex Vlasic (Wilmette, Ill.), Case McCarthy (Clarence Center, N.Y.), and Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) are also committed to play for the Terriers.

STOPPING THE PIONEERS IN THEIR TRACKS: Sunday’s game marks the third time Team USA will face Utica College. The U18s will aim to stop the Pioneers six-game win streak where they have outscored their opponents 31-5.

In the last meeting between the two squads, the Pioneers took a 4-1 victory against the U.S. National Under-18 Team as Alex Tuch (2012-14/Vegas Golden Knights) scored the lone goal for the U18s.

RANSACKING THE BUCCANEERS: The U17s travel to Des Moines to take on the Buccaneers in a double header on Friday and Saturday. These will be the only two meetings against the Buccaneers this season.

The Buccaneers are last in the Western Conference with a record of 9-14-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) in the USHL entering the game.

LAST TIME OUT: Following a holiday break, the U17s traveled to Muskegon to face off against the Lumberjacks on Dec. 29. Team USA goaltender Cameron Rowe (Wilmette, Ill.) stopped 31-of-34 shots as U17s lost, 3-0, to the Muskegon Lumberjacks in USHL action. NTDP alum, Keegan Karki (2016-17) was in net for the Lumberjacks and recorded a shutout after facing twenty shots from Team USA.

Following the loss to the Lumberjacks, the U17s returned to USA Hockey Arena on Saturday (Dec. 30) to defeat the Youngstown Phantoms, 4-1. Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) tallied two goals to lead Team USA to victory. Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) also scored for the U17s. Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) made 31 saves for Team USA.

The U18s played two games against NCAA competition. Ryan Savage (Novi, Mich.) and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) scored for the U.S. National Under-18 Team in a 5-2 loss to the University of North Dakota Fighting Hawks on Saturday night (Dec. 30) at Ralph Engelstad Arena. The U18s outshot the Fighting Hawks 12-7 in the final frame but were unable to find the back of the net. NTDP alum Shane Gersich (2013-14/University of North Dakota) picked up the empty netter for the Fighting Hawks to bring it to the final score of 5-2. NTDP alum, Grant Mismash (2015-17/University of North Dakota) picked up the primary assist on the third UND goal in the first period.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team defeated Ferris State University, 5-1 in its first game of the New Year Tuesday (Jan. 2) at USA Hockey Arena. K’Andre Miller (Minnetonka, Minn.) scored twice and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.), Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.), and Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) scored once to lead Team USA to victory. Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) made 26 saves in the win.

WORLD JUNIOR CHAMPIONSHIP UPDATE: Team USA has advanced to the semifinals after a 4-2 victory against Russia in the quarterfinals. In that game, NTDP alum Kieffer Bellows (2015-16/Portland Winterhawks) recorded two goals to lead Team USA to victory and now leads the tournament in goals with 6. Brady Tkachuk (2015-17/Boston University) is fourth in points (7) and tied for fifth in assists (5). Among defensemen, Adam Fox (2014-16/Harvard University) ranks fourth in points (5) and tied for third in assists (4) amongst defensemen. Joseph Woll (2014-16/Boston College) ranks third among starting goaltenders in goals against average (2.26) and fifth in save percentage (.905).

The U.S. National Junior Team faces Sweden today (Jan.4) in the semifinal round of the 2018 IIHF World Junior Championship. Puck drop is set for 4 p.m. ET live on NHL Network.The U.S. is 14-1-0-15-2 (W-OTW-OTL-L-T) all-time against Sweden. In eight playoff round meetings, the U.S. holds a 7-1 record. Over the last 10 U.S.-Sweden meetings, Team USA is 9-1 with its only loss being a 1-0 preliminary round setback in 2016.

The 23-player roster for the 2018 U.S. National Junior Team that is competing in the 2018 International Ice Hockey Federation World Junior Championship in Buffalo, New York, from Dec. 26, 2017 - Jan. 5, 2018 features 12 former NTDP players. All four Team USA captains are also NTDP alumni. Joey Anderson (2014-16, University of Minnesota Duluth) is serving as the team captain while Bellows, Fox and Ryan Lindgren (2014-16/University of Minnesota) were tabbed alternate captains of the squad. Bellows, Fox and Lindgren were all members of last year’s U.S. National Junior Team that captured the gold medal at the 2017 IIHF World Junior Championship in Montreal and Toronto, Canada.

The other alumni competing for Team USA includes: goaltenders Jake Oettinger (2014-16/Boston University), and Woll, defenseman Quinn Hughes (2015-17/University of Michigan) and forwards Trent Frederic (2014-16/University of Wisconsin), Max Jones (2014-15/London Knights), Will Lockwood (2014-16/University of Michigan), Josh Norris (2015-17/University of Michigan) and Tkachuk.

POST GAME SKATE AND PEPSI PACK VALUE NIGHT: The U18s will host a post-game skate after the matchup with Utica College, where team members will stick around after the game to skate with fans. Additionally, if two or more tickets are purchased to Sunday’s game, a free food voucher and lineup card will be received. The food voucher works for a free Pepsi beverage and hot dog or slice of pizza.

NTDP AT THE OLYMPICS: Four NTDP alumni were named to the U.S. Men’s Olympic roster.

Troy Terry (2014-15/University of Denver) skated one season with the NTDP as a member of the Under-18 Team. He helped the U.S. win gold at the 2015 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship as well as the 2017 World Junior Championship. Terry is known for his three shootout goals to defeat Russia in the semifinal and his shootout goal to defeat Canada to win the World Junior Championship last year.

Jordan Greenway (2013-15/Boston University) was also a member of the gold medal winning 2017 World Junior Championship team.

Chad Kolarik (2002-04/Adler Mannheim) skated two seasons with the NTDP in Ann Arbor, Mich. before moving across town to play for the University of Michigan. While at Michigan, Kolarik helped the Wolverines to two conference titles in 2005 and again as a senior in 2008. The Abington, Pennsylvania native skated six seasons in the NHL and AHL before moving overseas to the Swedish Hockey League in 2013. Kolarik currently plays for Adler Mannheim in the German hockey league.

Ryan Stoa (2003-05/Spartak Moskva) skated two seasons with the NTDP and helped claim gold at the 2005 IIHF Under-18 Men’s World Championship with the Under-18 Team. He also helped the U.S. to a bronze medal at the 2007 IIHF World Junior Championship. Stoa skated four seasons for the University of Minnesota where he helped Minnesota win the WCHA championship his sophomore season and captained the team his senior season. Stoa currently plays for the Spartak Moskva in the KHL.

KANE CONTINUES HOT STREAK: Chicago Blackhawks forward and NTDP alum Patrick Kane (2004-06) has scored 13 points in his past 10 games and currently sits 15th in points (40) and tied for 12th in goals (17) among NHL players. He recently scored his 300th career NHL goal and became the 21st American-born skater to ever hit that number. Kane is one of three active Americans to reach the milestone, joining fellow NTDP alum, Phil Kessel (2003-05) and Joe Pavelski, who also both recorded their respective 300th goals this season.

STAR WARS COMING TO USA HOCKEY ARENA: The NTDP will host its annual Star Wars Night on Saturday, Jan. 20, 2018. The game, which is sponsored locally by Hines Park Lincoln, will pit the U.S. National Under-17 Team against the Sioux Falls Stampede of the United States Hockey League.

For the fifth time, Team USA will wear Star Wars inspired jerseys during this event. Previous designs include Han Solo (2015), the iconic Stormtrooper (2016) and Star Wars: The Force Awakens hero robot BB-8 (2017). This season’s look will feature a reboot on a previous fan-favorite jersey. A full jersey unveiling will be announced in the coming weeks.

The jerseys will be auctioned off online at the NHL Auctions page. Bidding will commence following the game. Proceeds will benefit C.S. Mott Children's Hospital in Ann Arbor, Michigan. Since the auction’s inception, it has raised over $40,000 for the hospital.

Among the festivities planned for Star Wars Night are appearances by characters represented by the 501st Legion & Rebel Legion costuming groups, as well as a ceremonial puck drop. 2018 UNDER-18 FIVE NATIONS TOURNAMENT TICKETS ON SALE: The 2018 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament presented by Hines Park Lincoln will take place February 13-17 at USA Hockey Arena.

Top hockey players under the age of 18 from the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States will compete in a total of 10 games at USA Hockey Arena. This is one of the most heavily NHL scouted events as a majority of the players competing are eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft.
