Ed Minney’s road to Michigan State University has been pretty extensive.

The senior goaltender was born in Georgia, moved to Ohio and settled down in Pennsylvania by the time he was in tier one youth hockey. The road didn’t stop there, though — Minney traveled to New York every year to play in select camps, and was also a constant contender in USA Hockey’s Strelow Goalie Mentor Program in Ann Arbor.

Around this time, Minney started to consider USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program and was invited to the Top-40 Camp soon afterwards. Finally, before the 2012-13 season, he was invited to play for the NTDP.

Minney then found himself in Ann Arbor, playing for the U17s during his first season with the NTDP. He saw net time during 35 games and ended the season with a .890 save percentage. He was a part of the U.S. National Under-17 Team that took first place at the 2012 Four Nations Tournament in Switzerland after a 3-0 run, where he totaled a .912 save percentage.

“I played AAA the year before, and we had practice a couple times a week, but it was nothing like the workout program that they had there,” Minney said. “It was kind of a wake-up call and really good for my development, strengthening up and developing on the ice. I actually had two different goalie coaches while I was there, but both years, doing the goalie sessions was really beneficial.”

With the U18s, Minney improved his numbers to 38 games played and a .900 save percentage for a career 77 games with the NTDP. During the 2013-14 season, Minney was a part of the U.S. National Under-18 Team that won gold at the IIHF Men’s Under-18 World Championship, where he posted a perfect save percentage and a 2-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) record.

After his two seasons with the NTDP, Minney committed to play down the road from the NTDP’s home rink in Ann Arbor to East Lansing for the Michigan State University Spartans.

“I went on a couple visits here, once before committing to the NTDP, and I fell in love with the campus and everything,” Minney said. “It just felt like a really good fit overall. It kind of felt like home for me right away, so I went back on another visit and committed and was really happy with it. I love it here, it’s been great.”

Minney first saw game time for Michigan State in the final two periods of an exhibition with the U18s during the 2014-15 season, where he stopped 12 of 13 shots for a 4-1 win.

His first official collegiate game was during his sophomore season, when he recorded 34 saves in a matchup with Michigan Tech University that ended in a 4-4 tie. That same season, he earned his first start against Penn State.
