U18s Face-off against NCAA Opponents; U17s continue its USHL Slate

NTDP Notebook Week of Nov. 20-26

USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program enters play this weekend with a 26-7-0-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) record after the U18s earned two victories this weekend, defeating the Youngstown Phantoms, 8-5 on Friday night (Nov. 17) and shutting out Central Illinois, 5-0 on Saturday night (Nov.18). The U17s fell to the defending Clark Cup Champion Chicago Steel, 6-2 on Friday night (Nov. 17).

The U18s face-off against two NCAA opponents this week starting with Adrian College on Wednesday (Nov. 22) at USA Hockey Arena at 7 p.m. ET before traveling to Taffy Abel Arena to take on Lake Superior State University on Saturday night (Nov. 25) at 7 p.m. ET. The U17s are on the road as they continue its USHL slate against Sioux Falls Stampede Friday night (Nov. 24) at Denny Sanford PREMIER Center at 8:05 p.m. ET before facing the Omaha Lancers at Ralston Arena Saturday night (Nov. 25) at 8:05 p.m. ET.

LOCKING OUT THE BULLDOGS: The U.S. National Under-18 Team has won the last five meetings against Adrian College and holds the all-time series lead, 6-3-0 (W-L-T). The last matchup was on Sept. 28 at Arrington Arena as the NTDP defeated the Bulldogs, 4-2. The NTDP’s goal scoring came from  Tyler Weiss  (Raleigh, N.C.), Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.), Patrick Giles  (Chevy Chase, Md.) and  Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.). Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) picked up the victory in net saving 16 of 18 shots on net. Adrian College is ranked second in the nation in Division three coming into its matchup against the U18s with a 5-1-0 (W-L-T) record.

SINKING LAKE SUPERIOR: The U18s finish the weekend traveling to Lake Superior State University for the first time since 2015. Lake Superior stands with a record of 3-8-3 as the face-off against Team USA. The U18s won the last meeting on Oct. 4, 2015, 2-1 in overtime at Taffy Abel Arena. Clayton Keller (2014-16/Arizona Coyotes) recorded Team USA’s goal in regulation to extend the game into overtime. Patrick Khodorenko (2014-16/Michigan State University) netted the game winner in overtime from Adam Fox (2014-16/Harvard University) and Ryan Lindgren (2014-16/University of Minnesota). Joseph Woll (2014-16/Boston College) picked up the victory in net for the U18s stopping 26 of 27 shots.

HALTING THE STAMPEDE: The U.S. National Under-17 Team opens the weekend  by travleing to Sioux Falls for matchup against the Stampede as it will be a showdown of last week’s USHL Players of the week. Stampede forward, Artem Icanyuzhenkov was named USHL Forward of the Week while U18s K’Andre Miller and Jonathan Mor won Defensemen and Goaltender of the week respectively.

Last weekend Stampede goaltender, Mikhail Berdin, shot the puck from his own goal crease into Muskegon’s net for an empty net goal on Saturday night (Nov.18). This contest will be the first of two meetings this season.

The Stampede are 6-4-3-2 in the USHL entering this week ranked third in the USHL Western Conference. Team USA leads the all-time series 10-7-0 (W-L-OTL). Team USA defeated the Stampede last season, 4-2 on (Jan.29) at USA Hockey Arena as Erik Middendorf (Scottsdale, Ariz.) recorded two points in the contest netting a goal and picking up an assist. Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.), Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.), and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) recorded goals in the victory. Ryan Ullan (2016-17/Bismarck Bobcats) stood tall in net the Team USA picked up the victory and saving 30 of 32 shots faced in the contest.

The Lancers take on the Madison Capitols on Wednesday night (Nov. 22) before hosting the U17s.

LAST WEEKS RECAP: The U.S. National Under-17 Team dropped its second game of the season to the Chicago Steel, 6-2 Friday night (Nov.17). Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) tallied two assists in the game while the U17s goals came from Trevor Zegras (Bedford, N.Y.) and Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.).

Eight players chipped in during the U18s 8-5 victory at Youngstown on Friday night (Nov.17). The U.S. National Under-18 Team had goals from Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C), Ty Emberson (Eau Claire, Wis.), Jack DeBoer (Madison, N.J.), Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.), Adam Samuelsson (San Diego, Calif.), Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.), Jake Pivonka (Naperville, Ill.) and Trevor Janicke (Maple Grove, Minn.). Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) saved 29 of 34 shots.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team ended the weekend with a 5-0 shutout victory against Central Illinois. Jonathan Mor led the U18s between the pipes stopping all 29 shots faced to pick up his first shutout of the season. The U18s scoring was led by Gavin Hain (Grand Rapids, Minn.) and K'Andre Miller (Minnetonka, Minn.)who both tallied twice. Janicke also added a goal. Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) ended the night with three assists.

MILLER AND MOR NAMED USHL PLAYERS OF THE WEEK: K'Andre Miller (Minnetonka, Minn.) was named the Defenseman of the Week while Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) was named Goaltender of the Week. Miller recorded five points on the weekend (2-3-5). He picked up three points (2-1-3) in the U18s 5-0 win against the Central Illinois Flying Aces Saturday night at USA Hockey Arena. The night before, he added two assists in the U18s win at Youngstown in its 8-5 win.

The Wisconsin commit tallied seven assists in 34 games with the U17 Team last season. This year, he was named to the CCM/USA Hockey All-American Prospects game and was named a B-rated skater on NHL Central Scouting's Players to Watch List earlier in November.

Mor recorded his first shutout of the season on Saturday night in the 5-0 win, stopping all 29 shots. Mor currently has a 1-0-0 record with a 1.36 goals-against-average and a .960 save percentage in two USHL games.

2018 UNDER-18 FIVE NATIONS TOURNAMENT TICKETS ON SALE: The 2018 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament presented by Hines Park Lincoln will take place February 13-17 at USA Hockey Arena.

Top hockey players under the age of 18 from the Czech Republic, Finland, Russia, Sweden and the United States will compete in a total of 10 games at USA Hockey Arena. This is one of the most heavily NHL scouted events as a majority of the players competing are eligible for the 2018 NHL Draft.

HUGHES AMONG ROOKIE LEADERS: Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) is averaging a USHL-leading 2.40 points-per-game in five USHL games this season. His 12 points have him in first place among rookies in the USHL. Hughes has a three goals and nine assist in five games played.

HUGHES THE HELPER: Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) has recorded an assist in 14 of 17 games this season. He leads the U17s in overall points with (39) and Hughes recorded 15 assists during the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge including its exhibition game against Canada Red on (Nov. 2). Hughes is averaging 2.29 points-per-game.

COLLEGE ROUNDUP: NTDP alum and Anaheim Ducks draft pick Troy Terry (2014-15/ University of Denver) leads the nation in points in the NCAA with 23 (7-16-23) in 12 games.

Former NTDP defensemen Adam Fox (2014-16/Harvard University) Max GIldon (2015-17/University of New Hampshire) and Louie Belpedio (2012-14/Miami University) all rank in the top 20 in scoring among defensemen. Fox leads the NTDP alums, recording seven assists in seven games.

Four of last year’s U18s group (1999 birth year) currently rank in the top 25 in points per game by freshmen. Gildon, Grant Mismash (2015-17/University of North Dakota), Logan Hutsko (2015-17/Boston College) and Quinn Hughes (2015-17/University) have started their collegiate careers by averaging more than .75 points/game. Gildon leads the group with six goal and four assists through 11 games (.91 points/game).

MINORS HIGHLIGHTS: Jack Roslovic (2013-15/Winnipeg Jets) currently ranks second in AHL scoring (10-11-21) through 18 games with the Manitoba Moose.

Thatcher Demko (2012-13/Vancouver Canucks) is off to a solid start in his second professional season with Vancouver’s AHL affiliate, the Utica Comets. In ten appearances, Demko has posted a record of 5-4-1 with a 2.21 GAA and .925 save percentage.

ALUMNI NHL UPDATE: Clayton Keller (2014-16) leads the way rookies in their NHL campaigns. The Arizona Coyotes forward currently leads all rookies in goals (11), points (20) and shots on goal (73) through 23 games played. He is currently in fifth place in the league in overall goals with 11. Keller earned October Rookie of the Month Honors.

Will Butcher (2011-13/New Jersey Devils) is currently ranked second in assists among rookies, recording 14 in 20 games. He has been exceptional on the power play, recording eight power play points, which leads all NHL rookies.

Phil Kessel (2003-05/ Pittsburgh Penguins) ranks 10th in points with 24 (8-16-24) through 22 games.

Jason Zucker (2008-10/Las Vegas, Nev.) is enjoying a breakout campaign with the Minnesota Wild. He is currently tied for ninth in goals with 11 through 20 games. Zucker’s goals have come in bunches, recording seven goals in a five-game stretch between Nov. 8-16, including a hat-trick performance against Montreal on Nov. 9.

U18S NCAA SCHEDULE: The U.S. National Under-18 Team will skate in 15 NCAA games this season, including 11 tilts with Division I squads. The U18s record sits at 2-4-0 (W-L-T) against collegiate opponents. The U18s defeated Division III opponent, Adrian College (Oct. 28), 4-2.
