U18s Travel to Youngstown and host Central Illinois; U17s face-off against the Steel

NTDP Notebook Week of Oct. 1-8

USA Hockey’s National Team Development Program enters play this weekend with a 24-6-0-2-0 (W-L-OTL-SOL-T) record after the U18s finished the Five Nations Tournament with a record of 1-1-0-2 (W-L-OTL-SOL). The U.S. National Under-17 Team won the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge after defeating Canada Red, 6-4 on Saturday night (Nov. 11). The U17s ended the tournament with a perfect 6-0-0-0 record.

The U18s have two games this weekend as they travel to Youngstown to face-off against the Phantoms at the Covelli Center on Friday night (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. ET before returning to USA Hockey Arena to welcome the Central Illinois Flying Aces in their first ever appearance on Saturday night (Nov. 18) at 7 p.m. ET. The U17s have a single game this weekend as they host the Chicago Steel at USA Hockey Arena on Friday night (Nov. 17) at 7 p.m. ET.

ILLUDING THE PHANTOMS: This contest will be the second of nine meetings this season. Youngstown is 5-4-2-1 in the USHL entering this weekend. Team USA leads the all-time series 37-32-5 (W-L-OTL). Team USA holds the current 2017-18 season series 1-0-0 (W-L-OTL). Team USA defeated the Phantoms in the first meeting, 5-4 on (Nov. 3) at USA Hockey Arena as Mattias Samuelsson (Voorhees, N.J.) ended the game 2:05 into the overtime period after finding the back of the net as Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) and Jake Pivonka (Naperville, Ill.) picked up the assists. The NTDP finished the 2016-17 season 2-7-0-1 (W-L-OTL-SOL) against the Phantoms.

GROUNDING THE FLYING ACES: The U.S. National Under-18 Team hosts the Central Illinois Flying Aces for the first time at USA Hockey Arena Saturday night (Nov. 18) at 7 p.m. ET. The Flying Aces are formerly known as the Bloomington Thunder. This contest will be the second of nine meetings this season. Central Illinois is 7-5-0-1 in the USHL entering this weekend. Team USA holds the current 2017-18 season series 1-0-0 (W-L-OTL). Team USA defeated the Flying Aces in its first matchup of the season 5-2 on (Sept. 29) at UPMC Lemieux Sports Complex in the USHL Fall Classic. Team USA had goals from Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.), Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y.), Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.) and Jay O’Brien (Hingham, Mass.). Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) earned the victory between the pipes stopping 24 of 26 saves in the contest.

SMOULDERING THE STEEL: The U17s are coming off a championship victory in Dawson Creek, B.C. at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge over Canada Red, 6-4 on Saturday night (Nov. 11). Chicago is 8-2-0-1 in the USHL entering this weekend.The Steel leads the all-time series 25-20-7 (W-L-OTL). Team USA holds the current 2017-18 season series 1-0-0 (W-L-OTL). Team USA defeated the Steel in the first meeting, 10-5 on (Oct. 7) at Fox Valley Ice Arena. Michael Gildon (Plano, Texas) fueled Team USA to victory with his first career USHL hat-trick. Team USA had seven different goal scorers during the game. Goals came from Gildon with three, Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) with two, and Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.), John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.), Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.), Drew Helleson (Farmington, Minn.) and Alex Turcotte (Island lake, Ill.) each added a goal of their own.

WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE RECAP: The U.S. National Under-17 Team won the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a perfect record of 6-0-0. The U17s (2001 birth year) entered the 2017 World Under-17 Challenge with an 9-1-0-0 overall record following a 9-1 victory against Canada Red in a pre-tournament matchup on (Nov. 2). The U17s opened the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with a 5-2 victory against the Czech Republic on (Nov. 5) and continued recording victories against Canada White 4-3 in overtime on (Nov. 6), Canada Black 5-4 on (Nov. 7), Sweden in the quarter-finals 5-1 on (Nov. 9), Canada White in the semifinals 9-1 on (Nov. 10) and finally taking home the championship against Canada Red 6-4 on (Nov. 11). Team USA recorded 5.67 goals-per-game, 2.50 goals-allowed-per-game along with 43 goals for and 15 goals against. The U17s were fueled by the strong performances of Jack Hughes (5-10-15 in 7 GP), Cole Caufield (8-5-13 in 7 GP), and Matthew Boldy (3-6-9 in 7 GP). Hughes, Caufield and Boldy led the tournament in overall points. Spencer Knight recorded a 2.33 goals-against-average with a .881 save-percentage saving 52 of 59 total shots while Cameron Rowe recorded a 2.62 goals-against-average and a .897 save-percentage saving 70 of 78 total shots. Knight and Rowe combined for a record of 6-0-0 during the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge.

UNDER-18 FIVE NATIONS RECAP: The National Under-18 Team traveled to Hameenlinna, Finland to compete in the 2017 Under-18 Five Nations Tournament where they finished the tournament tied in third place with the Czech Republic with five points and a 1-0-2-1 record (W-OTW-OTL-L). Oliver Wahlstrom and Joel Farabee led Team USA with a goal, two assists, for three points each in the tournament.

HUGHES AMONG ROOKIE LEADERS: Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) is averaging 2.50 points-per-game in four USHL games this season. He is currently in second place among rookies with 10 points. Hughes has a goal and two assist in the last two games played.

CAUFIELD FINDING THE NET: Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) currently leads the U17s with 23 goals in 16 games this season. Caufield recorded a hat trick in the World Under-17 Challenge Championship game against Canada Red (Nov.11). He has scored in 14 of 16 games. In eight of the 16 games, he has scored two or more goals. Caufield is right behind Hughes (37) in points with (31).

HUGHES THE HELPER: Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) has recorded an assist in 13 of 16 games this season. He leads the U17s in overall points with (37) and Hughes recorded 15 assists during last weekend’s World Under-17 Hockey Challenge including its exhibition game against Canada Red on (Nov. 2). Hughes has recorded two or more assists in eight of 16 games. Hughes is averaging 2.31 points-per-game.

WORLD UNDER-17 HOCKEY CHALLENGE ALL-STAR TEAM HONORS: Cole Caufield and Jack Hughes named All-Star forwards of the tournament.

NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT SIGNING DAY: The NTDP had 13 players sign their National Letter of Intent this week.

ALUMNI NHL UPDATE: Clayton Keller (2014-16) leads NTDP rookies in their NHL campaigns. The Arizona Coyotes forward currently leads all rookies in goals, points and shots on net. Keller has recorded 17 points (11-6-17) in 19 games with rookie leading 65 shots on goal. He is currently in fifth place in the league in overall goals with 11. Keller earned October Rookie of the Month Honors.

Will Butcher (2011-13/New Jersey Devils) leads rookies in assists recording 13 in 17 games and power-play points with 8 points.

Phil Kessel (2003-05/ Pittsburgh Penguins) is tied for third in points with 24 (8-16-24) while being one point behind third place in assists with 16.

Auston Matthews (2013-15/Toronto Maple Leafs) is tied for second place in plus-minus with a plus 14 rating.

ALUMNI WRAP UP: Grant Mismash (2015-17/University of North Dakota) earns his third NCHC Rookie of the Week honor. Troy Terry (2014-15/ University of Denver) ranked second in points in the NCAA with 18 points (5-13-18) in 10 games averaging 1.80 points-per-game and leads the NCAA in plus-minus with a plus 12.


U18S NCAA SCHEDULE: The U.S. National Under-18 Team will skate in 15 NCAA games this season, including 11 tilts with Division I squads. The U18s record sits at 2-4-0 (W-L-T) against collegiate opponents. The U18s defeated Division III opponent, Adrian College (Oct. 28), 4-2.
