U17s defeat Minnesota Elite League, 6-5 in Overtime

U17s comeback late to win in overtime

The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated a combined roster Minnesota Elite League Select Team, 6-5 in overtime Sunday in New Hope, Minnesota to remain undefeated on the season.

The Minnesota Elite League Select Team opened the scoring at 1:38 of the opening frame before Alex Vlasic (Wilmette, Ill.) tied the game at one. He put with U17s on the board at 2:20 of the first period with help from Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.).

The Select Team retook the lead again at 7:49 of the first period.

Skater Leaders

At 12:34 John Beecher (Elmira, N.Y.) tied the game once again. Michael Gildon (Plano, Texas) and Henry Thrun (Southborough, Mass.) added assists on the goal.

Garrett Worth broke the tie for the Select Team at 7:07 of the second period to make it 3-2.

Caufield tallied his second point of the game, and eighth goal of the season, at 10:11 of the second period to tie the game at 3.

The Select Team added two more to close out the second period up, 5-3.

Alex Turcotte (Island Lake, Ill.) scored at 2:30 of the third period to bring the U17s within one. Owen Lindmark (Naperville, Ill.) added the assist.

At 12:44 of the third period, Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) sent the puck to the back of the net to tie the game 5-5. Danny Weight (Lattingtown, N.Y.) picked up the lone assist.

At 3:29 of overtime Caulfield scored his second of the game and the game-winner. Turcotte tallied the assist. 

U17 goaltender Cameron Rowe (Willmette, Ill.) finished the game with 21 saves while Select Team goaltender Gabe Holum finished the game with 40 saves.

The U17s are back in action next Saturday, Oct. 21, when the Green Bay Gamblers come to USA Hockey Arena in USHL action. Tickets are still available at USAHockceyNTDP.com/Tix.
