The U.S. National Under-17 Team defeated Team Southwest of the Minnesota Elite League, 5-1 Saturday in New Hope, Minnesota behind two goals from Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.)
Ryder Rolston (Birmingham, Mich.) opened the scoring at 4:12 of the second period. Drew Helleson (Farmington, Minn.) and Cole Caufield (Stevens Point, Wis.) tallied assists on the goal.
At 4:53 of the second period, Jack Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) scored the eventual-game-winner with help from Danny Weight (Lattington, N.Y.).
Matthew Boldy (Millis, Mass.) added another goal at 1:55 of the third period to put the U17s up, 3-0. Judd Caulfield (Grand Forks, N.D.) and Domenick Fensore (Thornwood, N.Y.) added assists on the goal.
Team Southwest tallied its goal at 4:04 of the third period to cut the U17s lead, 3-1.
Henry Thrun (Southborough, Mass.) extended Team USA’s lead at 11:26 of the final period with help from Caufield and Sean Farrell (Hopkinton, Mass.).
Hughes tallied his second of the game, short-handed, at 14:37 of the third period. Weight picked up his second assist on the goal.
Ten U17 players tallied a point in the win, with three collecting multiple points.
U17 goaltender, Spencer Knight (Darien, Conn.) finished the game with 25 saves. Team Southwest goaltender Jackson Hjelle finished with 47 saves.
The U17s take on a combined Minnesota Elite League Select roster tomorrow, Oct. 15 at 11:30 am CT.
