U18s Fall to Miami University, 7-5 in Home Opener

Jack Deboer scores two in home opener loss

The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell to Miami University, 7-5 Friday night in its home opener.

Jack DeBoer (Madison, N.J) opened the scoring at 9:19 of the opening period sending in a one-timer from Adam Samuelsson (San Diego, Calif.). Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) also picked up an assist on the goal.

Miami tied the game at 11:26 of the first period on a goal from Grant Hutton.

He scored his second of the game, and took the 2-1 lead for the RedHawks, at 19:59 of the opening period.

Miami added another two goals early in the second period before the U18s rallied back.

Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) snuck the puck past Miami goaltender, Chase Munroe on the short side at 6:50 of the second period. Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.) and Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) added assists.

Jake Pivonka (Naperville, Ill.) scored a shorthanded goal at 8:44 of the second period to pull the U18s within one.

After Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) made a big save on the breakaway, Walhstrom tied the game at four with help from Samuelsson at 16:15 of the middle frame.

Miami retook the lead, 5-4 after putting home a rebound at 16:45 of the second.

DeBoer scored his second of the game on a cross-crease pass from Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y) to tie the game at five at 1:07 of the third period.

Miami’s Gordie Green scored his second goal of the game at 6:04 of the third period to give the RedHawks the 6-5 lead.

The RedHawks added an empty netter to win, 7-5.

Mor finished the night with 25 saves while Miami’s Munroe tallied 16 saves.

The U18s are back in USHL action tomorrow, Oct. 14 when they travel to Muskegon to take on the Lumberjacks at 7:15pm ET.
