The U.S. National Under-18 Team fell, 4-3 at the University of Notre Dame Sunday night in its NCAA opener.
Cam Morrison opened up the scoring for Notre Dame at 7:42 of the first period after converting on a 2-on-1.
Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.) tied the game for the U18s at 19:18 of the first period, on a 5-on-3 power play, sending the puck top shelf on a one-timer. Adam Samuelsson (San Diego, Calif.) and Bode Wilde (Birmingham, Mich.) picked up assists on the goal.
In the second, Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) notched the U18s second goal with assists from Wilde and Notre Dame commit, Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis.).
At 4:35 Notre Dame tied it again, at two apiece.
With 9:07 left in the second period, NTDP alum and current Notre Dame freshman, Dylan St. Cyr saw his first action in net for the Fighting Irish.
The Fighting Irish netted the tie-breaker at 1:32 of the third period.
Notre Dame added the eventual game-winner at 3:11 of the third period on the rebound to go up 4-2.
At 18:56, with the USA net empty, Mattias Samuelsson (Voohees, N.J) sent the puck into the Notre Dame net from the right circle to make it 4-3. Wahlstrom and Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.) picked up assists on the goal.
U18 goaltender, Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) ended the game with 36 saves.
The U18s are back on the road in NCAA action Friday, Oct. 6 at Bowling Green State University at 7:37 pm ET.
