U18s Defeat Muskegon in Shootout

Farabee scores two and shootout winner in Muskegon

Joel Farabee (Cicero, N.Y) scored twice in regulation and added the only goal in the shootout as USA Hockey's National Team Development Program U18 team defeated the Muskegon Lumberjacks, 7-6, in a game played Saturday night at L.C. Walker Arena in Muskegon.

Besides Farabee's pair, Oliver Wahlstrom (Quincy, Mass.), Gavin Hain (Grand Rapids, Minn.), Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.), and Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) scored for the U18s, now 2-0-0 on the season.

The U18s trailed 3-0 after one period, but came back to lead, 4-3, after 40 minutes.

Anthony Del Gaizo scored twice, while Jachym Kondelik,Wyatt Bongiovanni, and Donovan Ott scored for Muskegon.

Kondelik, Del Gaizo and Kaiser scored in the first period to give the Lumberjacks its 3-0 lead.

The U18s comeback started on Hain's first goal of the year at 3:41 of the second period, accepting a sharp pass from Jake Goldowski (Thornhurst, Pa.) out of the left corner and snapping a shot past Muskegon goaltender Adam Brizgala.

Giles was next at 12:46, scoring on a shot from the left circle after  Gruden worked the puck through traffic in front of the Muskegon goal.

The U18s tied the game on Farabee's shorthanded marker at 14:27 of the second. Hain set up the play when he stole the puck and found Farabee on a breakaway.

The U18s took its first led when Spencer Stastney (Mequon, Wis.) found Gruden for the goal at 15:44 of the second period.

Jonathan Mor (Highland Park, Ill.) started in goal for the U18s and stopped 27 of 30 shots in 29:19. Drew DeRidder (Fenton, Mich.) played the rest of the way and stopped all three attempts he faced in the shootout.

The team traded goals in the third period with the U18s getting goals from Wahlstrom at 11:04 and Farabee at 16:26.

After a scoreless overtime, Farabee decided the game in the shootout.

Muskegon outshot the U18s, 50-36.

The U18s hit the road next weekend, playing the Central Illinois Flying Aces (formerly Bloomington Thunder) on Friday at 4 p.m. ET and the Omaha Lancers on Saturday at 10:45 a.m. ET at the USHL’s Fall Classic in Pittsburgh.
