The U.S. National Under-17 Team fought back from deficits twice against the Youngstown Phantoms but ultimately fell, 3-2, in a shootout here tonight at the Covelli Centre.
Youngstown scored off a tap-in at the back door to take the lead with 1:03 remaining in the opening frame.
Just :38 into the second period, Tyler Weiss (Raleigh, N.C.) skated into the Youngstown zone up the right side, went behind the Phantoms goal and scored on a backhand from the left circle. Austin Pooley regained the lead for the Phantoms at 8:40 to make it 2-1.
At 12:07, Jonathan Gruden (Rochester, Mich.) finished a Patrick Giles (Chevy Chase, Md.) backhanded attempt during a Team USA power play to send the game into the third knotted at 2-2.
Neither team could convert in the third, and the game was sent into overtime. The Phantoms put three shots on net while the U.S. had two shots on goal in the seven-minute overtime period, but the game was went to a shootout.
Pierce Crawford scored in the fourth round of the shootout to seal the 3-2 win for Youngstown.
Ryan Ullan (Hibbing, Minn.) made 32 saves for the U.S., while Ivan Kulbakov stopped 22 for Youngstown.
