Hendricks Named Captain; Foligno, Murphy Alternates

U.S. Men’s National Team begins play in the 2016 IIHF Men’s World Championship Friday against Canada


St. Petersburg, Russia – Matt Hendricks (Blaine, Minn./Edmonton Oilers/St. Cloud State) has been named captain of the 2016 U.S. Men’s National Team, while Nick Foligno (Buffalo, N.Y./Columbus Blue Jackets) and Connor Murphy (Dublin, Ohio/Arizona Coyotes) have been selected as alternate captains.

Hendricks, playing in his first event for Team USA, was the captain of the U.S. Men’s National Team that claimed the bronze medal at the 2015 IIHF Men’s World Championship in Ostrava and Prague, Czech Republic.

Foligno has played for the U.S. Men’s National Team twice previously in the IIHF Men’s World Championship, including in 2009 and 2010. Murphy is also a two-time veteran of the U.S. Men’s National Team (2004, 2015) and in addition helped Team USA to the gold medal in both the 2013 IIHF World Junior Championship and the 2011 IIHF U18 Men’s World Championship.

The U.S. Men’s National Team begins play in the 2016 IIHF Men’s World Championship Friday (May 6) against Canada. Opening faceoff in the first of seven preliminary-round games for the U.S., is set for 9:15 a.m. ET (4:15 p.m. local time) and the game can be seen live on NBC Sports Network in the U.S., and will be streamed live via NBC Sports Live Extra.
