U18 Bronze Medal Wraps Up 2015-16 Season

Team USA Beat Canada 10-3 to Earn U18 Bronze on Sunday

The U.S. Men's National Under-18 Team beat Canada 10-3 on Sunday to claim the bronze medal at the 2016 International Ice Hockey Federation Under-18 Men's World Championship in Grand Forks, North Dakota.

Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.) and Logan Brown (Raleigh, N.C.) paced the offensive attack against Canada with two goals each. Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.), Nick Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.), Kailer Yamamoto (Spokane, Wash.), Zach Walker (Boise, Idaho), Griffin Luce (Williamsville, N.Y.) and Will Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) also scored, while goalie Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) had 29 saves to earn the win.

“I couldn’t be more proud of how the guys came out and played hard and played the right way,” head coach Danton Cole said. “We handled business and responded.”

Team USA’s gold-medal hopes were dashed in the semifinals with a 4-2 loss to Finland on Saturday. Bellows and Yamamoto scored the goals while goalie Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo.) stopped 22 shots.

In Thursday’s quarterfinals, Team USA beat the Czech Republic 8-0. Anderson scored two goals while Oettinger finished with 15 saves to earn the shutout. Trent Frederic (St. Louis, Mo.), Pastujov, Ryan Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.), Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.), Casey Mittelstadt (Eden Prairie, Minn.) and Graham McPhee (Bethesda, Md.) also scored.

Team USA finished with a perfect 4-0-0-0 (W-OTW-OTL-L) in round-robin action.

U18 World Championship Notes

  • Team USA claimed its 13th-consecutive medal at the U18 World Championship. Overall, Team USA has won 14 medals, the most of any country. The U18s have nine gold medals, three silvers and two bronzes.
  • Defenseman Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y.) and Clayton Keller were named to the All-Tournament Team, with Keller taking home MVP honors.
  • Fox earned the IIHF Directorate Award for Best Defenseman. Fox is the sixth member of Team USA to earn the honor.
  • Keller, Fox and Joey Anderson were named Team USA's best three players of the tournament
  • Keller (4-10) led Team USA with 14 points. Kailer Yamamoto (7-6) finished second with 13 points. Logan Brown (3-9) was third with 12 points. Rounding out the top six were Anderson (7-2), Casey Mittelstadt (4-5) and Fox (1-8) with nine points each.
  • Goalies Jake Oettinger and Joseph Woll split time. Oettinger finished 4-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .934 save percentage. Meanwhile, Woll was 2-1 with a 1.34 GAA and a .946 save percentage.

  • Forwards Hudson Fasching (Apple Valley, Minn./2011-13) and Dylan Larkin (Waterford, Mich./2012-14), along with defenseman Brady Skjei (Lakeville, Minn./2010-12), have been added to the U.S. Men's National Team for next month’s IIHF Men's World Championship in Russia.
  • Chicago’s Patrick Kane (Buffalo, N.Y./2004-06) notched his fifth career postseason overtime goal on April 21, tying him for third in NHL history with Glenn Anderson. Only Joe Sakic (8) and Maurice Richard (6) have scored more such goals.
  • Minnesota’s Jordan Schroeder (Lakeville, Minn./2006-08) tallied his first NHL playoff goal in the Wild’s Game 5 win on April 22.
  • Pittsburgh’s Bryan Rust (Bloomfield Hills, Mich./2008-10) became the first rookie in Penguins history to record at least three points in a playoff game after scoring twice and adding an assist in a win over the Rangers on April 23.
  • Boston College goalie Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif./2012-13) signed with the Vancouver Canucks. Demko, a second-round pick of the Canucks in the 2014 draft, led the country with 10 shutouts last season and was fifth with a .935 save percentage and seventh with a 1.88 GAA.
  • University of North Dakota defenseman Keaton Thompson (Devils Lake, N.D./2011-13) inked a deal with the Anaheim Ducks. He recorded 17 points, including 15 assists in 43 games this season, in helping UND to the national championship. The Ducks picked him in the third round of the 2013 draft.
