Dhooghe Scores One Goal, Adds One Assist in Setback

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Three different skaters tallied a goal, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell, 6-3, to the North American Hockey League Selects here tonight at USA Hockey Arena. The game was a part of the 2016 NAHL Top Prospects Tournament that ran from Feb. 15-16.

Team Selects opened the scoring just one minute into the first frame. Near the midway point of the stanza, Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.) fed Brady Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo.) a cross-slot pass for the equalizer. Max Gildon (Plano, Texas) also assisted. However, the Team Selects answered 12 seconds later to restake the lead, and then built a two-goal advantage near the end of the frame to close the period, 3-1, in the Selects’ favor.

The squads traded chances throughout the middle frame, but with time dwindling down in the session, Sean Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.) pulled Team USA within a goal on a slot shot, through a crowd, to end the period, 3-2. Graham Slaggert (South Bend, Ind.) earned an assist on Dhooghe's marker.

In the final frame, Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn.) knotted the game, 3-3, on a odd-man rush at 7:05. Dhooghe picked up the lone helper on the play. Team Selects scored back-to-back goals 3:09 apart to go-ahead, 5-3. The Selects sealed the victory with an empty-net goal in the closing minute for the 6-3 final score.

Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio) kicked out 35 shots in the loss for Team USA, while Jack LaFontaine and Tyler Johnson combined to stop 36 shots in the victory for the Selects.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team will return to action Sunday (Feb. 21) to face the United States Hockey League’s Muskegon Lumberjacks. Puck drop is slated for 2 p.m. at USA Hockey Arena and will stream live on FASTHockey.com.
