Charity Game Benefitted Plymouth-Canton Marching Band

PLYMOUTH, Mich. - Four different U.S. National Under-17 Team players notched a goal, while three former National Hockey League players each tallied two goals as the Detroit Red Wings Alumni Association bested the U17s, 8-4, here tonight at USA Hockey Arena. The charity game, known as “Pucks for Pasadena”, benefitted the Plymouth-Canton Marching Band’s trip to the Tournament of Roses Parade in January 2016.

In the first 25-minute half of the game, the Red Wings Alumni took an early lead when Petr Klima (Detroit, Edmonton, Tampa Bay, Los Angeles, Pittsburgh) opened the scoring at 4:35 of the stanza. Less than two minutes later, Wayne Presley (Chicago, San Jose, Buffalo, New York Rangers, Toronto) doubled the alum lead with help from Mickey Redmond (Montreal, Detroit) and Brent Fedyk (Detroit, Philadelphia, Dallas, New York Rangers). Sergei Samsonov (Boston, Edmonton, Montreal, Chicago, Carolina, Florida) collected his first of two goals at 9:12 of the first half, giving the Red Wing Alumni a 3-0 lead.

Near the 10-minute mark of the half, Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn.) fired the puck up the left-wing boards to David Farrance (Victor, N.Y.) who carried the puck deep and wrapped it around the back of the alumni net, slipping it past Eddie Mio (Edmonton, New York Rangers, Detroit) to put the U17s on the board. Farrance next fed Sean Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.), standing on Mio’s doorstep, for USA’s second goal of the night.

Presley potted another goal in the final four minutes to give the Red Wings Alumni a 4-2 lead to end the half.

Brady Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo.) won the opening faceoff in the second half and chased the puck deep into the offensive end. He slung the puck out of the left corner to Joey Cassetti (Pleasanton, Calif.) parked in front of the net for the initial backhand shot, but Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.) poked in the rebound to pull the 17s within a goal just 16 seconds into the stanza.

At 6:24, the Red Wings Alumni scored back-to-back goals just 1:36 apart to extend their lead, 6-3. Dhooghe wheeled into the zone, fed Mismash a pass in the slot and he flipped the puck toward the net. Josh Norris (Oxford, Mich.) skating near the left net side swept the puck in to make it a 6-4 game.

In the latter part of the second half, Samsonov and Klima each notched their second markers of the game on breakaway chances for the 8-4 final score.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team is back in United States Hockey League action Friday (Nov. 27) against the Bloomington Thunder at U.S. Cellar Coliseum. Puck drop is slated for 8 p.m. ET, and the game will be available live on FASTHockey.com.
