Fresh Off Five Nations Win, U18s Get Back Into Schedule

U17 Squad has Bye Week After World Under-17 Hockey Challenge

National Team Development Program squads return to Michigan after their respective international tournaments. The U.S. National Under-18 Team hosts two games at USA Hockey Arena while the U.S. National Under-17 Team has a bye week.

SEASON CONTINUES: Fresh off a win at the Five Nations Tournament in Switzerland, the U18s host the Youngstown Phantoms on Friday and the Niagara University Purple Eagles on Saturday. Puck drop is scheduled for 7 p.m. both nights.

The U18s posted a perfect 4-0 mark at the Five Nations Tournament with wins over the Czech Republic (3-1 on Nov. 4), Sweden (4-3 on Nov. 5), Finland (5-2 on Nov. 7) and Switzerland (7-0 on Nov. 8).

Kieffer Bellows (Edina, Minn.), Clayton Keller (Swansea, Ill.) and Will Lockwood (Bloomfield Hills, Mich.) each scored in the win over the Czech Republic. Goalie Jake Oettinger (Lakeville, Minn.) stopped 19 of 20 shots to earn the win.

Trent Frederic (St. Louis, Mo.) tallied the game winner with 32 seconds left in the second period against Sweden. Joey Anderson (Roseville, Minn.), Graham McPhee (Bethesda, Md.) and Bellows also scored. In goal, Joseph Woll (St. Louis, Mo.) kicked out 20 shots.

In the win over Finland, Keller paced the offense with two goals while Ryan Lindgren (Minneapolis, Minn.), James Sanchez (Northbrook, Ill.) and Anderson had single tallies. Oettinger finished with 10 stops in goal.

Bellows and Keller each scored two goals while Woll stopped all 16 shots in the shutout victory over Switzerland. Lockwood, Nick Pastujov (Bradenton, Fla.) and Keenan Suthers (Macomb, Mich.) recorded single tallies. 

BYE WEEK: Following a sixth-place finish at the 2015 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge, the U17s will enjoy a bye week and return to action Nov. 20 against the Fargo Force at USA Hockey Arena.

The U17s won Group A at the World Hockey Challenge with a perfect 3-0 mark, beating the Czech Republic (6-1 on Nov. 1), Canada White (7-5 on Nov. 2) and Canada Black (6-1 on Nov. 3). However, they dropped a pair of one-goal games in the playoffs, falling 5-4 to Sweden in the quarterfinals on Nov. 5 and 5-4 to Finland in overtime in the fifth-place game on Nov. 6.

Against Sweden, Sean Dhooghe (Aurora, Ill.) tallied a pair of goals while Max Gildon (Plano, Texas) and Logan Hutsko (North Caldwell, N.J.) added single tallies. Goalies Adam Scheel (Lakewood, Ohio) and Dylan St. Cyr (Northville, Mich.) combined for 20 saves.

Scott Reedy (Prior Lake, Minn.) tallied a pair of goals to lead the offense against Finland. Sasha Chmelevski (Huntington Beach, Calif.) and Quinn Hughes (Orlando, Fla.) had the other goals. St. Cyr finished with 35 saves.

  • Former NTDP forward Frank Vatrano (East Longmeadow, Mass./2010-12) made his National Hockey League debut for the Boston Bruins on Saturday. He scored his first goal to give the Bruins a 2-1 lead over the Montreal Canadiens, but Boston fell 4-2. Click here for a video of his first goal.
    In addition, Vatrano was named the American Hockey League Rookie of the Month for October. He scored 10 goals and added two assists in nine games for Providence during the month. This included a four-goal output in Providence’s 6-4 win at Portland on Oct. 11.
  • Former NTDP forward Andrew Copp (Ann Arbor, Mich./2010-12) scored his first NHL goal in Winnipeg’s 3-2 win at Columbus on Oct. 31. Copp, who is now on injured reserve, has played in 11 games and has two points.
  • Former NTDP and current University of Connecticut forward Tage Thompson (Oyster Bay, N.Y./2014-15) earned Hockey East Rookie of the Week honors on Nov. 2. Thompson tallied a hat trick in a 5-2 win over Boston University on Oct. 27.
  • University of Denver defenseman Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis./2011-13) was named the National Collegiate Hockey Conference Defenseman of the Week on Nov. 2. Butcher posted two goals and four points in DU’s two contests at Boston College and Boston University.
  • Former NTDP player and assistant coach John Wroblewski (Neenah, Wis./1997-99) enters his first season behind the Youngstown bench. Wroblewski spent the past two seasons as an assistant coach with the Rochester Americans of the AHL.
  • The U18s carry a 12-3-1 (W-L-T) record into this week, including a 9-0-1 record in its last 10 games.
  • At the U18 Five Nations, Clayton Keller (7-5) led all skaters with 12 points in four games. Kieffer Bellows (4-3) and Adam Fox (Jericho, N.Y./0-7) finished in a three-way tie for third with seven points. Joey Anderson (3-2) tied for ninth with five points. Chad Krys (Ridgefield, Conn./0-4) and Will Lockwood (2-2tied for 13th with four points each.
  • In goal for the U18s, Jake Oettinger and Joseph Woll each played two games at the Five Nations. Oettinger finished 2-0 with a 1.50 goals-against average and a .918 save percentage. Woll also was 2-0 with a 1.50 GAA and a .923 save percentage.
  • Heading into its bye week, the U17s hold an 8-6-4 (W-L-OTL) overall record.
  • Scott Reedy (6-3) led the U17s at the World Under-17 Hockey Challenge with nine points while Quinn Hughes (1-5) finished second with six points. Five players — Brady Tkachuk (St. Louis, Mo./2-3), Grant Mismash (Edina, Minn./2-3), Josh Norris (Oxford, Mich./2-3), Evan Barratt (Bristol, Pa./1-4), and Jacob Tortora (Victor, N.Y./1-4) — tied for third with five points each.
