ANN ARBOR, Mich. - Saturday's battle between in-state rivals the U.S. National Under-18 Team and Michigan State University will unfold in front of a wide audience as Fox Sports Detroit Plus is set to televise the contest live from Munn Ice Arena in East Lansing, Mich. Team USA is seeking its second-straight victory over the Spartans in the series.
FSD's broadcast is scheduled to begin at 7 p.m. EST. For a full channel listing, visit foxsportsdetroit.com. On-air talent is set to include Ken Daniels, Manny Legace, and Lindsey Hayes.
Saturday's match-up will hold special significance to current National Team Development Program forward Dylan Pavelek (Marysville, Mich.) and goaltender Edwin Minney (Wind Gap, Pa.), as both are verbally committed to play for the Spartans next season.
"It's an exciting feeling to be playing against my future teammates and in front of the coaching staff," said Pavelek. "We're going to go out there and have fun while trying to win. It'll be a great experience."
Last season, on Jan. 22, 2013, current Boston College netminder Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif./2012-13) helped Team USA shutout the Spartans, 3-0, in East Lansing. Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis./2011-13), Kevin Labanc (Staten Island, N.Y./2011-13), and Anthony Louis (Winfield, Ill./2011-13) each scored in the victory.
This season, Michigan State boasts one NTDP alumnus on its roster, netminder Will Yanakeff (Jerome, Mich./2008-09), who is scheduled to start in net on Saturday.
Notable alumni of both the NTDP and Michigan State University include NHL stars David Booth (Washington, Mich./2001-02) of the Vancouver Canucks, John-Michael Liles (Zionsville, Ind./1997-99) of the Carolina Hurricanes and Corey Potter (Mason, Mich./2000-02) of the Edmonton Oilers.
Team USA currently holds a record of 7-8-0 (W-L-T) against NCAA Division I and III schools this season, including wins over Lake Superior State University, the University of Michigan and Miami University.
The U.S. sports a record of 5-4-0 (W-L-T) versus the Spartans all-time ... Team USA has been outscored by Michigan State 32-30 in the series ... Nineteen players from USA Hockey's National Team Development Program have suited up for Michigan State University.
