WATERLOO, Iowa - Colin White (Hanover, Mass.) scored twice, but the U.S. National Under-17 Team fell to the Waterloo Black Hawks, 6-4, here tonight at Young Arena. With the loss, the U17s went 1-1-0 (W-L-OTL) on its United States Hockey League road trip this weekend.

Waterloo opened the scoring at 10:48 of the first period, before White knotted the game just 1:58 later. Luke Kirwan (DeWitt, N.Y.) skated below the Black Hawks goal line and slid a pass behind the Waterloo net to White. White maneuvered into the left face-off circle, quickly whipping around toward the net and sent the puck between Mathias Israelsson's pads for the score. White struck again 46 seconds before the period expired, converting while on a two-man advantage. After surrendering a short-handed breakaway tally, the U.S. regrouped in their own end to force an odd-man rush toward Israelsson. Jeremy Bracco (Freeport, N.Y.) and Zach Werenski (Gross Pointe, Mich.) exchanged passes before finding White for the one-timer to take a one-goal lead into the first intermission.

Luke Kunin (Chesterfield, Mo.) pushed the U.S. lead to two goals at the 4:40 mark of the second stanza with a power-play tally of his own. Kunin screened Israelsson and redirected a shot off the stick of Caleb Jones (Frisco, Texas). The Black Hawks pulled back within one at 9:37 and tied the game at three goals apiece less than two minutes later before taking a short-lived lead at 11:25. Dennis Yan (Troy, Mich.) scored off a deflected shot to pull Team USA back even with the Black Hawks, 4-4, just 10 seconds later. The middle frame continued as Waterloo scored its fourth of the period at the 15:00 mark before the U.S. had a goal negated on a goaltender interference call with 2:07 remaining in the period.

Trailing by one goal entering the third period, Team USA looked to find the equalizer but were unable to find the back of the net again. Waterloo added an insurance goal at 19:50 to secure the 6-4 victory.

Luke Opilka (St. Louis, Mo.) made 40 saves in the loss for the U.S., while the tandem of Israelsson and Cal Petersen kicked out 27 shots for Waterloo in the win.

The U.S. National Under-17 Team now focuses its attention to the 2014 World Under-17 Hockey Challenge which will take place from Dec. 28, 2013 - Jan. 4, 2014. The tournament will be hosted by Cape Breton, Nova Scotia and features five regional Canadian teams and five international teams including the United States.
