Three-Goal First Period Carries Under-18 Team Past Green Bay Gamblers

GREEN BAY, Wis. - A three-goal first period carried the U.S. National Under-18 Team past the Green Bay Gamblers, 3-1, on March 3, 2013, at the Resch Center. The U18s improved its record against United States Hockey League foes to 14-5-2 (W-L-OTL) this season.

Team USA scored twice in the first 1:36 of the opening frame to take a 2-0 lead. Michael McCarron (Macomb, Mich.) took a pass from Will Butcher (Sun Prairie, Wis.) and buried the puck into the net for the first score. Evan Allen (Sterling Heights, Mich.) also assisted. Thirty seconds later, Jack Eichel (North Chelmsford, Mass.) lit the lamp. Connor Clifton (Matawan, N.J.) and Keaton Thompson (Devils Lake, N.D.) registered assists. A power-play strike by Tommy Vannelli (Minnetonka, Minn.) extended the U.S. lead to three at 10:23. Butcher earned his second assist and J.T. Compher (Northbrook, Ill.) collected the secondary helper.

After a scoreless second stanza, Green Bay tallied a goal at 3:50 of the final frame. Thatcher Demko (San Diego, Calif.) made 23 saves, eight saves in the third period to earn the victory for Team USA.

The U.S. National Under-18 Team will next travel to Indianapolis, Ind. to face the Ice on March 8-9. Both games will start at 7:05 p.m. EST at Bankers Life Fieldhouse. The U18s carry a 2-0-1 (W-L-OTL) record against Indiana this season.
